China launches a cheap, powerful AI model — what it means for Italian SMEs

On July 17, 2026, MIT Technology Review reported China’s latest AI leap: an open-source model matching GPT-4o’s performance at 80% lower cost. The same newsletter covered perimenopause misinformation, but we focus on the tech shift that redraws geopolitical lines.

Why it matters: While Europe debates regulation and Italy figures out how to use ChatGPT for newsletters, Beijing builds AI infrastructure at prices that SMEs in Southern Italy could afford — if those models were available in the West. They aren’t. Chinese models often come with opaque licenses or require local clouds. The result: Italian companies remain locked into OpenAI, Google, or Meta, paying subscription fees in dollars and exporting data overseas. We see clients spending €200/month on AI subscriptions without measuring ROI — a cost, not an investment.

Our position is clear: Europe must not only regulate AI, it must build it. And Italian SMEs can’t wait for Brussels.

We at Meteora Web come from accounting: balance sheets, double-entry bookkeeping, margins. When a client asks whether to use AI, our first question is: what does it cost and what does it return? With Chinese models slashing training costs by 50% yearly, the competitive gap widens. If a US competitor automates customer service at cents per query, and a Chinese firm does it at a tenth of that, where does the Italian business still doing everything manually end up? Security is another unknown: we’ve seen shared servers with sensitive data, no backup, expired SSL certificates. Adding an AI model without controls is like leaving the door open.

Here’s what to do: test open-source models (Mistral, Llama, Qwen) on your own server right now. Don’t rely entirely on foreign SaaS without evaluating exit costs. If you’re a developer, learn to deploy on European GPUs (Scaleway, OVH). If you’re a business owner, ask your vendor: “Can this AI tool be hosted in Europe? Do we retain data ownership?” When we build platforms for clients, we use Laravel and Vue specifically to keep code and data under control. AI is no exception.
