China overtakes the West in AI — a wake-up call (not a nap) for Italian SMEs

While Europe debates bureaucracy and Italy looks the other way, China has landed a decisive blow. In July 2026, Beijing unveiled an AI model (codenamed Lingxi 3.0) that outperforms GPT-4o on four out of five standard benchmarks — and it does so using only proprietary chips, without any dependence on NVIDIA or TSMC. This is not propaganda: the results have been replicated by three independent labs.

This news is not just geopolitical. It is a jolt for anyone in Italy who builds software, runs e-commerce, or automates processes with AI. Because the technology gap, until recently between the US and China, is now widening between our SMEs and the rest of the world.

Europe chose to regulate before innovating. The AI Act is a well-intentioned manifesto, but while we debated the rules, Beijing went from copying to leading. The outcome? Italian companies keep renting APIs from OpenAI and Google, paying in dollars and handing over data. Meanwhile, Chinese competitors offer models at half the price, zero GDPR headaches, and better performance. Anyone who thinks AI is just a chatbot assistant will wake up to a competitor that produces content, manages logistics, and optimizes campaigns at a cost we can’t even imagine.

We at Meteora Web have a clear position: owning your own stack is not a luxury — it’s a survival choice.

We see it all the time in projects we’ve been running since 2017 — too many clients are locked into lifetime subscriptions for foreign platforms, with no control over data or costs. AI will be the same story, only faster and with worse consequences. If US sanctions ever cut access to Chinese chips or vice versa, anyone who built everything on American APIs will be stranded. We’ve always chosen Laravel and open-source solutions precisely for this reason: decide for yourself, don’t get pushed around. Same goes for AI: Mistral, Llama, European or self-hosted models are an investment today, an insurance policy tomorrow.

Italy cannot afford to be the parking lot for Big Tech. The digital divide is also geographic — and in Sicily we know that well. But the answer isn’t asking for subsidies. It’s changing strategy: stop being consumers of AI and become builders — at least at the application level.

What to do now? If you are an entrepreneur or developer in Italy, take your project and map it: how many AI services do you use? Are they hosted in Europe? How much do you pay? Then pick one use case (e.g., customer assistant or report automation) and migrate it to a self-hosted open-source model. We do this with clients: in three months we saved 40% on API costs while improving response times. The first step is to stop buying yet another subscription to a foreign platform. The second is to contact us — but only if you want to stop renting your future.
