While the US celebrated a milestone in nuclear power, another story from MIT Technology Review deserves attention: China is stepping up efforts to circumvent Western restrictions on Nvidia chips. Beijing isn't just buying semiconductors — it's buying technology, know-how, and production capacity. And it has a ten-year plan.

The global tech race is now a chip race. The US tightens export controls, China responds with massive investments in IP and domestic fabs. Where is Europe? At the table with an empty plate. No high-end chip fabrication, no cutting-edge fabs, no systemic industrial strategy. The European Chips Act is a band-aid: funds are allocated, but a comprehensive vision is missing.

Our position is clear:

We, at Meteora Web, see this as a wake-up call for Italian SMEs. The digital tools we rely on daily — from cloud servers to industrial AI — depend on chips that may soon become geopolitical weapons. A company investing in Nvidia-based software today could face blocked updates, license revocations, or compatibility issues tomorrow. It happened with Huawei. It could happen on a larger scale. Europe must choose: build its own semiconductor supply chain, or become a hostage to forces beyond its control. For Italian SMEs, with no margin to switch suppliers overnight, this is an existential risk.

Buying Chinese servers or hoping US sanctions leave us alone is not a strategy. A Plan B is needed: open hardware, European alternatives, awareness. Anyone developing software, managing servers, or running AI projects must start thinking about technological independence. We already do this with our clients: open stacks, reversible cloud, data never held hostage. It's the only way to avoid being caught off guard.

What to do, now. If you're a developer or business owner: audit your project's hardware dependencies. Replace proprietary components with open alternatives where possible. Choose European cloud providers that won't revoke licenses on foreign orders. And follow EU chip legislation — it's not a detail, it's your productive future.
