Google has announced a significant update to the Android backup system. Starting this week, all data types included in Android backup settings will count toward the user's Google Account storage limit. The change affects SMS messages, call history, and device settings, which previously were not included.
Backup now includes SMS, calls, and settings
Previously, only images and videos uploaded to Google Photos and MMS data (photos and videos) consumed space in the free 15 GB Google Account or paid Google One plans. Google has now extended the counting to all data types present in backup settings. According to the company, the average impact is about 40 MB, a modest amount that should not worry most users.

New toggles for granular control
Alongside this change, Google introduces more granular controls. In addition to existing per-app permissions, users can now toggle specific categories: SMS and MMS messages, call history, and device settings. These options are rolling out gradually over the coming weeks. On Pixel devices, access them via Settings > Accounts and backup > Google Backup > Other device data. Alternatively, search for 'backup' in settings.
Gradual rollout for new and existing users
The new policy takes effect today for users setting up a backup for the first time, while existing accounts will see the change in the coming months. Google stated the goal is to provide greater transparency and control, standardizing the backup of all Android data. This decision follows similar policies by Apple for iCloud backups, where all data counts toward storage.
