Following the antitrust lawsuit filed by Epic Games, Google has announced a sweeping overhaul of its Play Store policies. Effective June 30, 2026, in the United Kingdom, United States, and European Economic Area, Google will lower its commission fees and accept alternative payment systems. For the first time, developers can offer billing methods other than Google's own, including the ability to direct users to external websites for purchases.

New fee structure from 10% to 25% based on annual earnings

Base service fees range from 10% to 25%, excluding payment processing charges. The first $1 million in annual earnings incur a 10% fee. Above that threshold, new installations are charged 20%, while existing installs (apps downloaded before the new rules) are charged 25%, with the exception of auto-renewing subscriptions. Link-out fees are set at 20% for apps earning over $1 million annually. Google applies an additional 5% fee for transactions that still use its billing system, on top of base fees. The Games Level Up and Apps Experience programs offer reduced rates between 10% and 20% for qualified developers, starting September 2026.

Alternative payments empower developers

Developers can now choose any third-party billing system, including those from Epic Games, and link users to websites to complete purchases without paying Google's additional 5% billing fee. This option initially covers the UK, US, and EEA, expanding to Australia, Japan, and South Korea by end of 2026, and globally by September 2027. Google stated the changes are a direct result of the court ruling that found its app store monopoly led to higher fees. Comparison with Apple differing regulatory approaches

While Google adopts a unified global policy, Apple continues to fight separate legal battles in multiple countries. Apple is currently appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court in the Epic Games v. Apple case. Pending fee calculations, Apple charges zero for external links in the U.S., while Google charges between 10% and 20%. The European Union's Digital Markets Act forces Apple to allow alternative payments, but Apple has not yet implemented a worldwide policy. Analysts suggest Google's move could influence the outcome of Apple's dispute with Epic Games. More details on the Play Store ecosystem are available on Wikipedia's Google Play page.

The new fee structure marks a significant shift for the Android ecosystem. Developers who long complained about the 30% commission now benefit from lower rates and payment flexibility. Google aims to foster competition and reduce consumer costs, though large developers' reactions remain to be seen. The decision follows the Epic Games case that proved Google's illegal monopoly on Android app distribution. Reduced fees may prompt other app stores to revise their policies.

The gradual global rollout is planned for Australia, Japan, and South Korea by end of 2026, with worldwide availability by September 2027. This timeline has drawn skepticism from some analysts, who worry about regional disparities. For an analysis of potential device price impacts, see the article on predicted MacBook price hikes.
