The device also turned up in a few online listings under the marketing name Google Pixel Tag, together with model number GA12506 and a color option called Fog Light.
Even though Android already benefits from the Find My Device network, Google has never shipped a first-party device to compete directly with Apple's AirTag. That appears to be about to change. The main job of the Pixel Tag is straightforward. It works with the Find My Device network to help users locate lost belongings by bouncing signals off nearby Android phones and tablets. The leaked marketing text stresses privacy and data security, and mentions a loud built-in speaker for quick nearby searches. The exact location of an item would be visible in the Find My Device app, assuming the owner grants the necessary permissions.
The effectiveness of this system depends heavily on how many phones take part in crowdsourced location. Right now, Android users must manually switch certain settings to the most permissive option, labeled With Network in All Areas. Most people never touch these controls, so the network remains far less dense than it could be. Google could change the default behavior in an update and activate this mode out of the box.
