According to data collected by Circana through its Player Engagement Tracker, the PS5 version of Halo Campaign Evolved barely reached 1% of daily active users on Sony's platform. The title ranked 29th in the list of most played games on PlayStation, a result that calls into question Microsoft's entire multi-platform strategy.
The comparison with Xbox and Steam shows a collapse in interest
On Xbox platforms, Halo Campaign Evolved claimed fourth place among games with the highest daily active users in the United States, with 8% of total players launching the title on July 28. On Steam, the game stops at 14th place, equal to 2% of active users. The PlayStation figure is even more disappointing, with just 1% of players engaged. As Circana senior director Mat Piscatella pointed out, these numbers demonstrate the huge challenge for new titles in a market dominated by live service behemoths.

The damage to the Xbox brand outweighs any economic benefit
Halo has represented for Xbox what Super Mario is to Nintendo. Deciding to publish the franchise's flagship title on the rival console was a very negative signal for fans. Forza Motorsport achieved a great response on PlayStation, but Halo and Gears of War did not replicate the same success. The Xbox brand identity has weakened, and the numbers prove that it was not worth sacrificing it for an audience that showed little interest. Microsoft wanted to make Xbox the only closed platform without exclusive content, but this choice has caused immense damage to the brand's perception.
The uncertain future of Halo after the cancellation of Project Ekur
Halo Campaign Evolved was met with controversy due to the lack of multiplayer and some controversial art direction choices. Additionally, Halo Studios recently canceled a multiplayer project called Project Ekur, also known as Tatanka. Sources close to the studio confirm that the series is now in a stalemate, without a clear roadmap. Microsoft's handling of Halo has historically been problematic, with weak television adaptations and repeated soft reboots confusing the main narrative.

Returning to exclusivity is not enough to rebuild trust
The poor performance on PS5 reflects how much Halo has lost luster in the collective consciousness of gamers. Xbox fans have turned to it for nostalgia, but the rest of the audience ignored the title. With Microsoft's reversal, moving back toward exclusive games, Gears of War E-Day will be a permanent Xbox exclusive. Bringing Halo back to exclusivity is an obvious choice, but reclaiming lost prestige is much harder. Trust in Halo Studios seems at an all-time low, and the biggest challenge for Xbox's new CEO, Asha Sharma, will be rebuilding the franchise's value.

In the meantime, Microsoft also has to manage other fronts, such as the promise of a smoother Windows 11 for 8GB RAM PCs, but the Halo problem remains the crucial knot for Xbox gaming identity. The infamous Halo franchise needs a deep rebirth, not just marketing moves.
