For the first time ever, a Halo game is available on PlayStation with Halo Campaign Evolved, but the debut on Sony's console has not exactly thrilled. According to industry analyst Rhys Elliott, the title is experiencing a notably slow start in terms of sales, with numbers that make one reflect on the appeal of this nostalgia operation.

Disappointing sales data on PS5 compared to other platforms

Elliott estimates that Campaign Evolved sold 351,000 copies on PS5 during July, reaching a total of 452,000 units to date, generating nearly $28 million in revenue. For comparison, the same title has sold 212,000 copies on Steam and about 900,000 on Xbox across console and PC. These numbers show a significant gap, with the Sony platform struggling to take off despite the historic anticipation from fans.

The $50 price tag is the main culprit

The analyst pointed to the launch price of $50 as one of the main reasons for the flop. Elliott stated that "fifty dollars for what is essentially a graphical touch-up of a 2001 game was always going to be a hard sell, and players clearly weren't having it." The perception of a visual upgrade rather than a true remake weighed heavily on the purchase decision.

Additional content and absence of multiplayer

Beyond graphical improvements, Campaign Evolved includes three new prequel missions through the Operation Meteorite story arc. However, multiplayer, which is perhaps the most iconic element of the series, is completely absent from this edition. This choice has certainly reduced interest for players who associate Halo primarily with the competitive online experience.

Comparison with Call of Duty ports on PlayStation

Elliott emphasized that the slow start of Halo on PS5 "stings even more" when compared to the success of the Black Ops 1 and 2 ports on PlayStation. Those games reportedly combined to sell more than 11 million units, generating hundreds of millions of dollars. A merciless comparison that highlights how the anticipation for Halo on PlayStation did not translate into proportional sales.

The franchise's decline and future prospects

The analyst also reflected on the general slowdown in sales and the diminishing profile of Halo as a franchise, after peaking with Halo 3 and Halo Reach. He wrote, "One can't help wondering what could have been if Halo had kept the trajectory it had around Halo 3 and Reach. A remake of the game that started it all landing this softly on a new platform makes me pretty sad, as a Halo fan." Meanwhile, Halo Studios has announced that more Halo games are in development, including one described as "like Fortnite" for its live-service approach. Additionally, the studio had stated that future Halo games would also come to PlayStation, but those comments were made before Asha Sharma became Xbox CEO and pledged to release more exclusive games for Xbox.
