How to Personalize Your Kindle Screensaver

[2026-06-20] Author: Meteora Web

If you are an avid reader, you likely spend many hours with your Kindle. The default lock screen, with ads or stock images, can become tedious. Personalizing your Kindle screensaver not only makes the device feel more yours but can also turn every reading break into a pleasant moment. This guide walks you through step by step on how to get a custom screensaver.

Removing Lock Screen Ads

Kindles with Special Offers typically cost $20 less than ad-free versions. If your device is ad-supported, you cannot change the screensaver until you remove them. To do so, go to the Amazon website on your desktop, click the hamburger menu on the left, and follow the instructions to pay for removal. Note: if you have a US-version Kindle but live outside the US, you may need to provide a US address and billing card. If you encounter issues, you can contact Amazon customer service and politely ask for free removal, but there is no guarantee. Once ads are removed, your Kindle will display Amazon-provided illustrations.

Enabling Book Cover as Screensaver

Newer Kindle models allow you to use the cover of the book you are currently reading as a screensaver. To enable this, go to Settings, then Device Options, then Lock Screen, and toggle on Show Book Cover. Compatible models include Kindle Paperwhite (10th generation and later), Kindle Oasis (10th gen), Kindle (11th gen), and Kindle Scribe. If your model is not listed, this native feature is unfortunately not available.

Trick to Use Custom Images

If you want a personalized image as your background, there is a workaround that bypasses system limitations. Warning: there is no official way to upload custom images without jailbreaking your device. However, you can trick the system by replacing a book's cover with your preferred image. Here is how: obtain an image file (e.g., a photo or drawing) and convert it to a Kindle-compatible format (JPEG or PNG). Use software like Calibre to modify the book's metadata and assign the custom cover. Then transfer the book to your Kindle and open it. When you put the device to sleep, the custom cover will appear. Remember: each time you want to see that specific image, you must select that book before locking the screen. You can change the cover of every book, but it is time-consuming if you read many books. Despite the complexity, it is an effective way to have a unique screensaver.
