Mastodon Launches Email Newsletters to Revive the Open Social Web

Mastodon, the open and decentralized alternative to big tech platforms like X and Threads, is betting on a new strategy to solve the open social web's biggest problem: audience growth. With the release of version 4.6 of its software, the social network is introducing email newsletters, a feature that allows creators to send their posts directly to subscribers' inboxes, even if those subscribers do not have or want a Mastodon account.

This move could transform Mastodon into more than just an X alternative, offering creators a way to build a portable audience on the decentralized web, reducing their dependence on other social platforms. By tying the functionality to email, a communication system that has stood the test of time, Mastodon appeals to those who want to support creators outside of big tech ecosystems without requiring them to sign up for a new social network.

The feature arrives as part of Mastodon 4.6, a broader update that also introduces refreshed user profiles and support for 'Collections', Mastodon's take on user-generated suggested follow lists popularized elsewhere as 'Starter Packs'. Instead of creating an account to follow a creator, users simply enter their email address to start receiving updates. The default post character limit on Mastodon is 500, but individual server administrators can modify this limit, allowing some servers to be set up specifically for longer posts.

With newsletters, the company sees potential to attract media organizations, independent journalists, and bloggers who want to allow anonymous visitors to subscribe to their accounts. The anonymity provided by these subscriptions could also encourage sign-ups from those who, for privacy reasons, dislike being tracked by traditional newsletter platforms. Because Mastodon accounts are portable, creators can take their audience with them if they decide to move to a different server.

The company explains in a blog post that, for now, the new feature is intended more for institutional users, referencing its recent move to offer hosting and moderation services to organizations that want to run their own servers. If adopted, email support could allow Mastodon to grow beyond its current 735,000 monthly active users, down from a peak of over 2 million just a few years ago. The wider open social web, known as the Fediverse, has over a million active accounts.

However, there are some caveats to using newsletters on Mastodon. Creators who want to take advantage of the feature need to have an assigned role on the server with the correct permissions, meaning they must set up their own server, opt for one hosted by Mastodon, or speak with their existing server operator. The company said it chose not to make newsletters a default feature because sending emails can 'significantly rack up the costs of operating a Mastodon server'.

This innovation fits into a landscape where privacy and data control are increasingly central.
