OpenAI has released a major update to its agentic AI platform Codex, targeting knowledge workers. The new tools include Sites, a rapid web hosting feature for internal enterprise applications; Annotations, which allows localized edits without full document regeneration; and role-specific plugins for data analytics, creative production, sales, and investment banking. The goal is to transform Codex from a developer assistant into an everyday operating environment for business professionals.
The Rise of Non-Developer Users
Internal research shows that 20% of Codex's 5 million weekly users are now non-developers. Financial analysts, marketers, and researchers are adopting the technology three times faster than traditional engineers. This shift underpins OpenAI's strategy to position Codex as the leading application for white-collar task automation.
Sites and the End of Static Documents
The most visible novelty is Sites, rolling out in preview for Business and Enterprise tiers. Teams can convert a static spreadsheet into an interactive scenario planner shared via a secure workspace URL. No more static decks: live dashboards with real-time updates. Sites are hosted by OpenAI, with administrators controlling enablement.
Role-Specific Plugins for Every Function
Six new plugins bundle 62 enterprise applications (including Snowflake, Salesforce, Figma) and 110 automated skills. Each plugin is dedicated to a department: Data Analytics, Creative Production, Sales, Product Design, Public Equity, and Investment Banking. Integrations eliminate the need for custom API builds. The investment banking plugin, for example, syncs Moody's and FactSet feeds for automated financial modeling.
Implications for the Future of Work
The update arrives as Microsoft holds its BUILD conference and Anthropic gains ground with Claude Cowork. OpenAI bets that agentic AI can reduce repetitive workload for office workers. However, the platform remains closed and proprietary. New features are available through Plus ($20/month), Pro ($100/month), or a pay-as-you-go model. Enterprise adoption of agentic AI is accelerating rapidly. For more on this technology, read our related article on Agentic AI in Healthcare. Also check our coverage of Trump's AI executive order.
