OpenAI gives $300 to every American — and Europe? The fake democracy of AI wealth

Sam Altman is back with his proposal: give every US citizen a $300 stake in OpenAI’s future profits, as a way to share the AI‑generated wealth. At the same time, the US Treasury warns about systemic risks from AI. Two stories that seem contradictory, but tell the same truth: AI remains a geopolitical game, not a charity.

Why it matters
For Europe and Italy, this proposal is a subtle message: “We produce AI, you consume the crumbs.” A one‑time $300 handout is the social price to make people accept an infrastructure controlled by a few (OpenAI, Microsoft, Google). The Treasury’s warning adds that risks (cyber, manipulation, concentration) need rules — but rules without European industrial capacity become barriers only for us.

We, at Meteora Web, have a clear stance

Stop chasing the “big‑tech American model with a few crumbs for SMEs”. AI is not a gift: it’s infrastructure. If Europe doesn’t invest in its own open, verifiable, regulated models, we’ll give away data, talent, and our future to those who set the rules. We see it daily: Italian SMEs buy closed AI solutions with lifetime subscriptions, losing control over data. It’s the same mistake made with social media and cloud: rent, not own. We chose proprietary stacks (Laravel, custom WordPress) for that reason: client data stays with them. An AI model must work the same way.

What to do
If you are an Italian entrepreneur or developer: stop looking at US offers with a consumer’s eyes. Demand transparency on training data, require EU‑based hosting, verify who owns the model. Every time you pay an AI subscription without knowing what it does with your data, you’re funding the digital divide. We work with local businesses from Southern Italy to build tech that is not second‑class. The alternative is to take the $300 — and lose the game.
