The US-based company PsiQuantum has announced concrete plans to build a fault-tolerant quantum computer using photons, housed in a facility that looks like a data center crossed with an ice cream factory. Inside, hundreds of stainless-steel cabinets kept at near absolute zero with liquid helium. Not theory. Not a lab prototype. An industrial architecture with an operational horizon before the end of the decade.

This is not just science news. It is geopolitics. And for Italian SMEs, it is a signal from afar that hits close to home: whoever controls quantum computing will control cryptography, molecular simulation, logistics optimization. In short, the next generation of industrial competitiveness.

Our position is clear:

At Meteora Web, we see daily how Italian companies struggle to digitalize — tight budgets, poor training. Now comes a revolution that risks widening the gap further. Europe has allocated funds, the Quantum Flagship exists, but governance is fragmented, private investment is low, and most SMEs don’t even know what a qubit is. Meanwhile, the US and China are sprinting. PsiQuantum is not an experiment: it’s a multi-billion-dollar bet on a technology that, if it works, will make current security systems obsolete. SSL certificates, public-key cryptosystems, digital signatures — everything e-commerce relies on — will need to be redesigned. We build websites, e-commerce platforms, handle SEO. But if tomorrow an attacker with a quantum computer cracks a private key, the impact on an online store is devastating: customer data theft, identity fraud, collapse of trust.

Italy is doubly exposed. First, because our industrial fabric is made of small and medium businesses that lack resources to prepare. Second, because the absence of a clear national strategy on quantum cybersecurity leaves companies dependent on imported solutions. You don’t need a quantum computer to be attacked — you need critical infrastructure that becomes vulnerable when quantum becomes real.

We are not alarmists: the timeline is still uncertain. But the direction is unequivocal. Just like in 2017, when we started talking to clients about GDPR while many ignored it. In the end, those who moved early saved fines and reputational damage. Same logic today.

We believe Europe must invest heavily on two fronts: hardware research (to avoid dependency) and applied training (to bring quantum into factories and offices). We cannot afford another American-cloud-style dependency — lifetime subscriptions and hostage data. Italian SMEs deserve to use quantum computing as a fair service, not a luxury for a few.

What to do then? If you design software or manage servers: start studying post-quantum cryptography. NIST protocols are already available. If you run a business: ask your provider if they have a quantum-safe migration plan. For everyone: monitor European calls (Horizon Europe, Digital Europe) funding pilot projects. The future won’t arrive tomorrow, but delay accumulates today. From a small agency in Sciacca, we see it in the servers we configure, the data we protect, the budgets we analyze. And we tell you: prepare. Because when the quantum computer becomes reality, those who didn’t move in time will pay the highest price.
