Samsung may bring silicon-carbon batteries to the upcoming Galaxy S27 series. After successfully introducing the technology in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, the South Korean company is reportedly considering extending it to its flagship lineup expected early next year. This move could mark a significant shift in energy performance for future premium smartphones.

The technological leap of silicon-carbon batteries

Silicon-carbon anode batteries replace traditional graphite with a composite material, increasing energy density without increasing volume. In the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Samsung managed to fit 14% more capacity than the conventional 4,400 mAh battery in the Galaxy Z Fold 7, using the same footprint. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 served as the testing ground for this innovation. Shifting to silicon-carbon could thus provide a leap forward for the S27 models, making them more competitive in the market.

If Samsung applies the same 14% increase to the Galaxy S27 Ultra, starting from the 5,000 mAh battery of the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the capacity would rise to approximately 5,700 mAh. This value would bring the device closer to Chinese rivals that already use third-generation silicon-carbon batteries with capacities ranging from 6,000 mAh to 7,500 mAh. Greater battery life would be a key advantage to compete with brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus, known for their generous batteries.

Challenges and Samsung's precautions

Despite the density benefits, silicon-carbon batteries have a known drawback: swelling. During charging and discharging cycles, silicon expands and contracts, causing faster degradation than conventional batteries. To mitigate this, Samsung has developed advanced coatings, protective additives for the anode, and a porous structure that maintains thermal and mechanical stability. The company, still scarred by the Galaxy Note 7 incident, has adopted very strict quality standards before expanding the use of this technology. Caution is understandable, but if Samsung overcomes the challenges, the Galaxy S27 could offer unprecedented battery life.
