Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold8, a foldable that for the first time adopts a wider format with a 4:3 aspect ratio, similar to an iPad mini. The choice is no coincidence: the dimensions of 5.5 inches when closed and 7.6 inches when open match the rumors about Apple's upcoming iPhone Ultra. The device, already available for preorder, offers a concrete look at what to expect from Cupertino's rival.
A wider screen improves multitasking and video consumption
Compared to previous Galaxy Z Fold models, the Fold8 abandons the tall and narrow format for a wider panel. The 5.5-inch external display is convenient for notifications, messages, and emails, while the internal 7.6-inch screen is suited for more intensive tasks such as running two apps side by side or watching movies. According to Dan Barbera, a MacRumors videographer who tested the phone, the user experience closely resembles that of an iPad mini.

Comparison with iPhone Ultra: reduced cameras and no Face ID
The Galaxy Z Fold8 mounts only two rear cameras and no telephoto lens, a setup also expected for the iPhone Ultra. Those choosing Apple's foldable might have to give up the superior camera quality of the iPhone 18 Pro, as well as Face ID. Samsung confirmed that the Fold8 uses a fingerprint sensor in the power button, a return to Touch ID that Apple might replicate to maintain a notchless design.
Improved hinge reduces but does not eliminate the screen crease
Samsung introduced new hinge technology to minimize the crease in the center of the display. Although less perceptible to the touch than previous models, it remains visible in certain lighting conditions. Apple has promised a nearly crease-free design, and it will be interesting to see how its first foldable performs.
