Players who completed Halo Campaign Evolved on Legendary difficulty have uncovered a secret ending that strongly hints at a Halo 2 remake. The post-credits scene features Sergeant Johnson relaxing on a makeshift beach chair, watching the ring explode, before being picked up by a Pelican. He turns to the camera, breaks the fourth wall, and says "See you in the sequel." A clear nod to fans of the series.

The Legendary ending that breaks the fourth wall

To unlock this sequence, players must finish the entire campaign of Halo Campaign Evolved on Legendary difficulty. The scene is deliberately humorous and echoes the original Legendary joke ending from Halo Combat Evolved. Johnson, lounging on a beach chair, observes the destruction of Halo and is then rescued by a Pelican. Before leaving, he looks at the camera and delivers the line that has thrilled the community. Many compared the atmosphere to a 1980s film, with the song Don't You (Forget About Me) seemingly about to play.

This is not the first time rumors of a Halo 2 remake have surfaced. Back in May, leaker Rebs Gaming reported that Halo Studios was developing remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3 without multiplayer, regardless of Campaign Evolved's success. Halo 2 already received a remaster in 2014 as part of Halo The Master Chief Collection. A full remake, however, would be a significant upgrade, similar to what was done for the first game.

Halo Studios focuses on remakes and live service

Campaign Evolved is the first title from the rebranded Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries. According to rumors, the studio is also working on a live-service game set in the Halo universe. The strategy appears to alternate between remakes and new entries, much like Capcom's approach with Resident Evil. If confirmed, a Halo 2 remake could be the next step after Campaign Evolved. The original 2004 game is still considered a masterpiece, with an iconic campaign and memorable moments such as the opening on Earth under attack.

The community has reacted enthusiastically to the secret ending, which serves as a proof of concept for the franchise's future. GameSpot called Campaign Evolved "the new gold standard for playing through the first Halo." The game launches on Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC on July 28, but premium edition owners gained access starting July 24, despite some technical issues on Xbox and PC.
