The UK has passed a generational tobacco ban: no cigarettes for anyone born after 2009. Experts already doubt its effectiveness, as reported by The Download (MIT Technology Review). The problem isn't the intention – it's the execution.

Why should we care? Because every law that touches digital commerce hits a technical wall. How do you verify age online? A simple checkbox won't cut it. In Italy, small businesses know how easy it is to bypass a pop-up. Without solid verification systems, the ban is meaningless. If the EU follows suit, Italian PMIs – e-commerce stores, vending machine operators, third-party platforms – will face the same gap. And cross-border sales make enforcement even harder.

Our position

We, at Meteora Web, see it every day: laws without tech enforcement are dead letters. The UK ban is a step forward, but without investment in digital identity, cross-border tracking and compliant platforms, it's just a symbol. We've seen clients with fake age-check forms and useless cookie banners. Security and compliance don't come from free plugins. If Europe wants a real generational ban, it must solve digital verification first – which means costs, infrastructure and skills most PMIs lack today.

Our position is clear: we need open standards for age verification, not proprietary solutions that lock down the market. And we need real investment, not abstract directives. In the meantime, illegal online sales will grow unchecked.

What to do if you run an e-commerce or a platform? Don't wait for the law. Start implementing serious age verification – government APIs, digital documents, user-side biometrics. Monitor EU regulations: Italy follows close behind. We recommend testing solutions now, to avoid scrambling later. Compliance is a cost, but doing it badly costs much more.
