Apple is about to unveil the most transformative version of Siri at WWDC 2026. According to leaks, the voice assistant will evolve into a true chatbot, powered by Google Gemini models under a multi-year deal reportedly worth $1 billion annually. This move lets Siri compete head-on with ChatGPT and Claude.
A Completely New Interface
With iOS 27, Siri leaves the orb animation for the Dynamic Island. A new "Search or Ask" feature is triggered by swiping down from the center of the display. Responses appear in a transparent card that expands into a conversation similar to iMessage. A standalone Siri app arrives, featuring a text bar and the ability to attach images and PDFs, just like rival chatbots.
Third-Party Chatbot Extensions
Apple is not closing the system: in iOS 27 users can select Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT as extensions for Siri. A dedicated Settings section will let users choose a default chatbot, which can also provide alternative voices for responses. This follows Microsoft breaking free from OpenAI with its MAI models, signaling a new era of AI competition.
Personal and Contextual AI
The new Siri can access emails, messages, photos, and files to provide personalized answers. Onscreen awareness lets it perform actions directly on what the user is viewing. Apple emphasizes privacy, keeping processing on-device and offering options to auto-delete chats after 30 days or one year.
Ecosystem Impact
Relying on Google Gemini for foundation models is a historic strategic shift, made necessary to catch up. Meanwhile, Google is pouring billions into AI compute via SpaceX, and the hybrid startup landscape is shifting with Reid Hoffman leaving Microsoft. WWDC 2026 promises to redefine artificial intelligence on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
