YouTube Tests AI Search Mode That Feels More Like a Conversation

[2026-04-28] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

Google is determined to integrate artificial intelligence across its product ecosystem, and YouTube is the latest platform to adopt this technology. A new experimental feature, dubbed "Ask YouTube," aims to redefine the search experience by introducing a more interactive and conversational approach. Users will be able to submit complex queries and receive comprehensive answers, encompassing both text and video references, with the option to ask follow-up questions for deeper exploration of the topics.

Currently, "Ask YouTube" is in its experimental phase, accessible from today until June 8, exclusively for YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are 18 years or older. To access this innovative search mode, users must first enable the feature within their account settings. Subsequently, they can click on the new "Ask YouTube" button located in the search bar. The interface will offer suggested prompts, or users can input their own questions, such as "plan a 3-day road trip between San Francisco and Santa Barbara." Upon receiving the initial results, users can proceed with follow-up questions or select from suggested prompts to delve further into the subject matter.

As demonstrated by a quick test conducted by The Verge, the query "short history of Apollo 11 moon landing" generated a summary of the mission, accompanied by relevant videos and timestamps indicating specific sections. Subsequent follow-up questions yielded similar outcomes. However, as is often the case with AI, certain searches, such as one related to a Steam Controller, produced factually inaccurate information, according to The Verge's Jay Peters. This observation aligns with the current limitations of artificial intelligence, which can occasionally generate imprecise data.

Tech companies often exhibit a greater enthusiasm for AI than the general public, and YouTube users, in particular, have frequently expressed skepticism towards AI-generated content. YouTube's new AI search function may potentially fare better with its subscribers, provided it proves effective in assisting them to discover quality content more rapidly and efficiently.
