You've spent on Facebook Ads, brought hundreds of visits to your site, but sales don't take off. That's normal. Cold traffic is like talking to strangers in a square — few buy at first contact. The difference is Facebook remarketing: going back to those who already visited you, with a more targeted and warmer message. That's where custom audiences and a funnel designed to convert come in.

We, at Meteora Web, work with businesses that often arrive with the same problem: budget spent on cold campaigns, disappointing returns. The solution isn't increasing the budget but changing the strategy. Remarketing, if done with the right audiences and progressive messages, turns visitors into customers without burning money. We come from accounting — every ad spend must have a measurable return. That's why we don't talk abstract theories but real setups.

Why is Facebook Remarketing Different from Cold Campaigns?

Cold campaigns target people who don't know you. Cost per click is higher, conversion rate lower. Remarketing speaks to people who have already interacted with you: visited a page, added a product to cart, filled a form. Their trust level is higher because they've already seen what you offer.

The common mistake is treating all visitors the same. Someone who saw the homepage doesn't deserve the same message as someone who abandoned cart. That's why custom audiences are the heart of remarketing: they segment based on real behavior, not guesses.

Sponsored Protocol

Concrete example: a clothing client of ours. With cold campaigns they spent €0.80 per click, conversions at 1.5%. Activating remarketing on those who viewed a specific category without buying dropped cost per click to €0.35 and raised conversions to 4.2%. Why? The message was relevant: "That dress you looked at is still available".

How to Create a Custom Audience That Actually Works?

Facebook offers different custom audience types. The most useful for remarketing are:

  • Website Custom Audience (based on Meta Pixel)
  • Customer file Custom Audience (upload emails, phone numbers)
  • Engagement Custom Audience (people who interacted with your Page, Events, Lead Forms)

We recommend starting with the Pixel and segment by visited pages. Here's how to set it up:

1. Go to Meta Events Manager (business.facebook.com/events_manager2) 2. Select your Pixel 3. Click "Create Audience" -> "Custom Audience" 4. Choose "Website" 5. Define rules: - Visited at least one specific page (e.g., /category/shoes) - In the last 30 days - Exclude purchasers 6. Give it a clear name (e.g., "Shoes viewed - last 30d - no purchase") 7. Click "Create"

Best practice: don't create audiences too broad. 30 days is good for warm, 90 for medium. For very small audiences (under 1,000 people), Facebook struggles to deliver ads. If volume is low, widen the time window.

Important: the Meta Pixel must track events correctly. If you haven't set up "Purchase" or "AddToCart" events, remarketing is blind. We always verify with the Pixel Helper's "Test Events" feature.

How to Build a Remarketing Funnel That Converts?

A remarketing funnel is a sequence of progressive ads. Don't bombard everyone with the same message. Here's the structure we use:

  • Top of funnel (awareness): for those who visited a generic page. Message: "Here's who we are and what we offer". Duration: 3-5 days
  • Middle of funnel (consideration): for those who saw a category or product. Message: "Benefits, reviews, comparisons". Duration: 5-7 days
  • Bottom of funnel (conversion): for those who abandoned cart or started checkout. Message: "Limited offer, free shipping, discount". Duration: 3-5 days

Operational example: a shoe ecommerce client. We created three separate audiences: 1) Homepage visitors, 2) Product page visitors without purchase, 3) Cart abandoners. For each audience, we created a 3-ad sequence over 10 days. Result: cart abandoners converted at 12% (vs 2% before).

To set the sequence in Facebook Ads Manager: create one ad set per audience, with multiple ads scheduled. Or use Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns (with remarketing) which automates partially, but be careful: you lose full control over audiences. We prefer manual setup for clear segmentation.

Frequency caution: if a person sees the same ad more than 3-4 times without reacting, you risk annoying them. Set frequency caps (1 impression every 3 days is a good start).

Which Metrics to Monitor to Avoid Wasting Budget?

Remarketing doesn't mean spending blindly. Measure efficiency. Key metrics are:

  • ROAS (Return On Ad Spend): how much revenue per euro spent. A ROAS of 3x is minimum for well-segmented remarketing
  • Frequency: average times a person sees your ad. Above 5-6, change creative or widen audience
  • CTR (Click-Through Rate): above 1.5% is good for remarketing. Lower means poor relevance
  • Conversions per audience type: compare performance of each custom audience. The one with lowest ROAS deserves less budget

Common mistake: looking only at cost per lead without considering customer lifetime value. A loyal customer is worth much more than a single purchase. Therefore evaluate remarketing over a 30-60 day horizon, not just first clicks.

We use Google Analytics 4 together with Meta Pixel to track the full journey. We export data to a sheet and calculate gross and net ROAS (net of product/service cost). Coming from accounting: if margin is 20%, a ROAS of 5x means every euro spent generates 5 in revenue but only 1 in margin. That seems little, but if the average customer buys multiple times, return grows.

Tools to Automate Monitoring

No need to stay 24/7 in Facebook Ads Manager. Just set:

  • Automatic rules: if ROAS drops below 2x for 3 days, pause the ad set
  • Email notifications: from Meta Business Suite for significant changes
  • Google Looker Studio dashboard: connect GA4 and Meta Ads to see everything at a glance
Example automatic rule in Ads Manager: Name: Pause if ROAS < 2x Condition: ROAS < 2 for 3 consecutive days Action: Pause ad set Apply to: this ad set

We built a proprietary platform to manage social presence for multiple clients, with editorial calendar and integrated reporting, but for a single business a few free tools are enough.

Which Bidding Strategy to Choose for Remarketing?

Meta offers several options: Conversions, Traffic, Views. For remarketing, the best choice is Conversions with objective "Purchase" or "Lead". Why? Because the audience is already warm, you want to push them to action, not to look.

If the audience is very small (less than 5,000 people), use Minimum budget and choose Manual bid with a target cost per acquisition. We start with a CPA target 20% above historical average, then lower gradually.

Caution: don't use remarketing campaigns with objective "Engagement" or "Like". Those serve to grow your page, not to sell. Remarketing must have a clear commercial purpose.

What to Do Now

If you want to start immediately, here are concrete steps:

  1. Check your Meta Pixel on your site (use Pixel Helper Chrome extension). If events are missing, configure them via Meta Events Manager
  2. Create 3 custom audiences from the site: page visitors, product visitors, cart abandoners. Set 30-day window, exclude purchasers in last 60 days
  3. Prepare 3 ads per audience (copy, image, offer) with progressive messaging
  4. Set up a conversion campaign with minimum budget (e.g., €10/day), choosing "Purchase" objective
  5. Activate automatic rules to pause if ROAS below 2x
  6. Monitor for 14 days and compare results with cold campaigns. If ROAS is at least 3x, gradually increase budget

Remember: remarketing isn't a magic wand. It works if your site is fast, your product has margin, and your creatives are polished. If those are missing, no audience will save you.
