Amazon Prime Video is set for a radical AI-driven transformation. According to a Reuters report, Jeff Bezos personally pushed the streaming service's executives toward a major app redesign to turn Prime Video into a showcase for Amazon's multi-billion-dollar AI investments. The project, internally codenamed Lighthouse, aims to revolutionize how over 200 million subscribers discover movies and TV shows.

Jeff Bezos drives the app overhaul with generative AI

Bezos expressed dissatisfaction with previous proposals from Prime Video head Mike Hopkins, who he felt did not leverage generative AI enough for deeper personalization. After a tense internal presentation last fall, the team scrapped old plans and started fresh under Global Head of Design Kam Keshmiri. Amazon's total AI capital expenditure this year has reached $200 billion, underscoring the priority given to this technology.

Project Lighthouse: Tailored recommendations for every subscriber

Lighthouse will analyze subscribers' viewing preferences to offer better recommendations and respond to voice requests. According to sources, the interface may introduce AI-powered content tiles that surface curated categories like "1980s action movies" or "Christmas rom-coms." Netflix already uses similar approaches, but Amazon aims to integrate AI more pervasively. The changes are still being tested with a limited group of users, but the final result could drastically overhaul the home page and navigation.

Radical interface redesign and new AI tiles

The new interface will retain the standard search bar and a dedicated area at the top of the homepage for new releases and live events, such as Amazon's exclusive Thursday Night Football. However, AI tiles will replace much of the current algorithmic recommendations. Movie studios pay for premium placement on the homepage, a standard practice that may evolve with AI. The final redesign depends on tester feedback, budget, and other internal factors.

Billion-dollar investments to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic

Lighthouse is just one piece of Amazon's AI strategy to compete with giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. Recently, OpenAI unveiled an autonomous hacker demonstrating the power of generative models, while Hugging Face suffered a data breach. These events underline the need for responsible AI implementation, a challenge Amazon must address with its redesign. For more context, Wikipedia provides an overview of Prime Video.
