According to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a new lineup of Apple Pencil accessories slated for launch in spring 2027 alongside new iPad Pro models. The most significant change involves the battery system: future versions of the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and the wireless-charging Apple Pencil Pro are expected to feature batteries that are easily replaceable by the user, in line with upcoming European regulations.
New Apple Pencil models arrive spring 2027 with removable batteries
Current Apple Pencil models are not designed for battery replacement. The devices recharge via a USB-C port or by magnetically attaching to the side of an iPad for wireless charging, but once the internal battery degrades, there is no simple way to replace it. The construction uses extensive internal adhesive and is not intended to be taken apart and reassembled. With the EU Battery Regulation coming into effect, Apple must rethink the design to allow users to replace the battery themselves.

EU Battery Regulation becomes enforceable in February 2027
Bloomberg references Article 11 of the EU Batteries Regulation, which came into effect in 2023 but becomes legally applicable only in February 2027. The law requires that portable batteries be readily removable and replaceable by the end user during the lifetime of the product. While the primary target is smartphones, the regulation also applies to accessories such as styluses, keyboards, mice, and headphones. For Apple, this means adapting products like AirPods, where miniaturization makes battery replacement challenging. The Apple Pencil, however, offers a simpler path for implementing a user-replaceable battery.
It remains to be seen exactly what changes Apple will need to make across its product line to achieve compliance. The company has already launched a Self Service Repair program, which could ease the transition. The new Apple Pencil represents a concrete step toward compliance and could influence other products like mice and keyboards. The European regulation is a turning point for electronics design. More details are available on the Wikipedia page for the EU Battery Regulation. With the deadline approaching, Apple must balance innovation and compliance, and the new Apple Pencil will be a key test for the future of battery replaceability in Apple devices.
