ASML's $400 Million Chip Machine and Anthropic's Government Clash — Europe Risks Being a Spectator

[2026-06-23] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

The facts: ASML, the Dutch company that builds the world's most advanced lithography machines, unveiled a $400 million system essential for 2nm chips. Meanwhile, Anthropic — the startup behind Claude — is clashing with the US government over AI safety rules and export controls. Two stories, one thread: European technology is a strategic asset, but politics is turning it into a weapon.

Why it matters: For Europe, the ASML machine is both pride and risk. It produces cutting-edge gear, but its main customers are TSMC (Taiwan) and Samsung (South Korea). The US is pushing to limit exports to China, leaving the Netherlands in the crossfire. Result: Europe makes the machines, but chips are fabricated elsewhere. Italy imports almost everything. Every Italian business — automotive, medical, Industry 4.0 — depends on chips it doesn't control. And with Anthropic fighting Washington over AI governance, it's clear AI will never be neutral: whoever sets the rules decides who wins. Italy, without its own supply chain, pays twice: chips cost more, and AI access is always conditioned by others' decisions.

Our position is clear: Europe cannot afford to be just the machine supplier and the technology buyer.

We at Meteora Web see daily Italian companies spending hundreds of euros per month on American AI APIs with no European alternative. Do they know where their data goes? No. Can they do anything if prices triple? No. Same script as chips: tech dependency = economic vulnerability. The EU AI Act moves in the right direction for transparency, but without real investment in manufacturing and training, it's just paper. We need fabs in Europe, yes, but also funding for Italian AI startups and incentives to adopt local solutions. Otherwise the digital divide becomes a canyon.

What to do: If you're an entrepreneur or developer, start mapping your tech dependencies. How many services come from outside Europe? Can you replace them? If you use AI for your business, demand transparency on data and supply chain. Support trade associations pushing for more technological autonomy. We chose Laravel and open source precisely to avoid vendor lock-in. Maybe it's time Italy chooses the same path.
