While Gemini has evolved impressively, deeply integrating with Android and leveraging Google's infrastructure, ChatGPT retains a competitive edge in usability and response quality. I use both daily, yet despite my Google AI Pro subscription, I continue to pay separately for ChatGPT. Here is why.
Gemini still lacks true interactive document editing
One of the most notable differences is file handling. ChatGPT allows uploading documents, images, and PDFs, then editing them interactively—modifying text portions, requesting targeted revisions, and receiving contextual answers. Gemini, on the other hand, handles files more statically: it reads content but does not facilitate granular collaborative editing. For professionals working on contracts, reports, or complex drafts, this limitation is significant.

DALL-E image generation remains superior to Imagen
ChatGPT natively integrates DALL-E 3, an image generator that produces coherent results matching textual descriptions and handles styles and details well. Gemini relies on Google's Imagen, which has progressed but still lags in fidelity for complex prompts. Moreover, ChatGPT offers iterative revision of images, while Gemini requires full regeneration for minor tweaks. For creatives and marketers, this difference matters.
Web search is smoother and more integrated in ChatGPT

Gemini sometimes relies on real-time data but presents sources less transparently. Additionally, ChatGPT allows on-demand web browsing without leaving the conversation, while Gemini requires extra steps. For in-depth research, ChatGPT is more reliable.

A killer feature of ChatGPT is the Code Interpreter (now Advanced Data Analysis). Third-party integration is more mature in ChatGPT

Gemini, despite its Google extensions, has far fewer integrations and does not yet support a plugin marketplace like OpenAI's. For complex automations and enterprise workflows, ChatGPT is the more flexible choice. I expect Google to close the gap, but today I pay two subscriptions to have the best of both worlds.
