Google introduced Gemini on Android Auto as a replacement for the old Assistant, promising a more natural and conversational voice experience. However, months after launch, a persistent bug continues to frustrate drivers: Gemini does not stop talking even after the user has interacted with the touchscreen to complete an action. A problem that Google has reportedly not fixed despite user reports.

The problem: Gemini keeps talking after touch

When using a voice command like "navigate to [location]" or "add a stop at [name]", Gemini opens a list of options in Google Maps and begins reading them aloud. The intention is to let the user complete the interaction entirely by voice, but drivers often prefer to tap the screen to quickly select the destination. The issue is that Gemini does not stop: it keeps speaking and asking "Which one would you like?" even after the user has tapped the desired option and navigation has already started. This creates confusion and distracts from driving.

Worse experience than the old Assistant

The old Google Assistant on Android Auto never behaved like this: when the user touched the screen, the system understood the interaction was complete and stopped the voice. With Gemini, the assistant keeps talking regardless of touch input. This happens even though the user has already fulfilled the request, making the experience frustrating and potentially dangerous because it encourages taking eyes off the road to try to silence the assistant.

Months without a fix from Google

The bug has been present since Gemini first rolled out on Android Auto in November last year. Despite numerous complaints from users on forums and social media, Google has not released a fix. Some updates have sporadically improved the situation, but the behavior remains inconsistent. It is surprising that such a simple bug to reproduce and fix is being ignored while the company heavily pushes AI integration. The failure to stop voice after a touch is a basic flaw that harms the overall usability of the system.

For comparison, Apple has already started internal testing of iOS 27.4 before iOS 27.0 release, showing an attention to development cycles that Google seems to lack for this particular bug. Even rumors about devices like the Apple Watch Series 12 grab attention, while a real problem affecting millions of Android Auto users remains unresolved.

Google should prioritize fixing this bug, which undermines user trust in the in-car voice assistant. Until then, drivers will have to live with a Gemini that does not know when to shut up. For more on security configuration, read our guide on HTTP Security Headers.
