Google and Epic Games have withdrawn their joint settlement agreement after it became clear the court was unlikely to approve it. With the settlement out, Google is bound by a permanent injunction issued in October 2024, requiring the company to allow alternative app stores on Android devices. In a court filing, Google stated it plans to begin supporting alternative app stores on July 22, 2026.

Google explained to The Verge that it withdrew the motion to modify the injunction to avoid a prolonged legal battle. The company wants to focus on executing its recently announced global business model evolution, aimed at delivering greater app store choice, lower prices, and more opportunities for developers and users. Google reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Android's industry-leading security and fostering a competitive ecosystem.

The lawsuit that reshaped the Play Store

Epic Games sued Google at the same time it sued Apple, but the cases had different outcomes. While Apple largely won its case, a jury found Google abused its power by operating an app store monopoly and charging excessive fees. After an appeal and a failed settlement attempt, Google must now comply with the injunction. In March, Google announced a worldwide Registered App Store program for sideloading, but in the U.S., alternative stores will be available starting next week.

Third-party app stores will be able to distribute the Google Play catalog of apps, and Google has published a guide on the process. These stores will be accessible through the Google Play Store, with Google charging a $5,000 annual access fee. Apps downloaded via alternative stores will still use the Google Play system, and Google will collect its service fee on those transactions. Google's separate agreement to lower fees and accept alternative payment methods remains in place regardless of the injunction.

Impact on Apple and global regulation

The injunction forcing Google to support third-party app stores does not directly affect Apple, but it is a legal outcome Apple has been fighting worldwide. The European Union's Digital Markets Act already requires Apple to support alternative marketplaces and sideloading in the EU, and Apple has repeatedly argued that this weakens user privacy and protections. Google's adoption of third-party stores through the Play Store could eventually influence Apple's own Epic battle or future regulatory changes.

Although Apple largely won its legal fight against Epic Games, the case continues. Apple was ordered to allow link-outs and alternative payment options in the U.S. in 2021, and compliance issues later led to a contempt ruling. Apple has appealed to the Supreme Court, which will hear arguments in late 2026 or early 2027.

This ruling marks a significant shift for the mobile app market. Developers can finally distribute their applications without going through the Google Play Store monopoly, reducing costs and increasing competition. However, security concerns remain: Google has assured it will maintain protection standards, but opening up to third-party stores could increase malware risks. The developer community watches closely, while Android users prepare for a more flexible download experience.

According to the injunction, Google cannot prevent alternative stores from offering Play catalog apps. Consumers will be able to choose whether to purchase apps through Google Play or competing stores, potentially saving money thanks to lower fees. Epic Games, which initiated the lawsuit, hopes to create a more open ecosystem similar to that of PCs. The future of mobile software is evolving, and this decision could accelerate the adoption of alternative distribution models worldwide.
