GoPro has raised the bar for action cameras with its new Mission 1 series, particularly the Mission 1 Pro. After months of testing in extreme conditions, I can confidently say this is the best action camera you can buy. The Type 1 50-megapixel sensor, unique in its class, enables 8K video recording at 60 fps with quality rivaling professional mirrorless cameras.

The Type 1 sensor redefines image quality

The main difference from previous models is the Type 1 sensor, measuring 13.2 x 8.8 mm. This allows capturing more light and detail with exceptional color accuracy. HyperSmooth stabilization crops only 10% of the image while maintaining native 8K resolution. The 4:3 open gate mode reaches 8K 30 fps, providing ample room for post-production cropping.

Slow-motion and GP-Log2 for professionals

The Mission 1 Pro can record 4K at 240 fps and 1080p at 960 fps, with quality matching traditional camcorders. The new 10-bit GP-Log2 simplifies color grading and allows seamless matching with footage from other cinema cameras. This is a huge leap over the previous Hero 13, similar to the advancements seen in thermal cameras, such as the off-the-shelf thermal camera that extended LIGO's reach.

Durability and fast charging

The Mission 1 Pro's housing is waterproof and rugged, as expected from a GoPro. Larger buttons make it easy to use with gloves, a detail appreciated in extreme environments like those described in the article about wildfires in Spain disrupting NASA's communications complex. The battery supports fast charging: 80% in 20 minutes, full in 30. Battery life reaches about 3 hours at 4K 24fps.

Low-light performance

The Mission 1 Pro's Low Light mode is impressive: no artifacts or aggressive post-processing, just natural results. This makes it ideal for shooting at dusk or in dim environments. In field tests, it outperforms competing action cameras by a wide margin.

The $699 price is steep, but for professionals and enthusiasts seeking the highest quality, the Mission 1 Pro is a worthwhile investment. For more on GoPro's history, check the Wikipedia page for GoPro.
