Smartphone upgrades have become uninspiring. Processors are fast enough, screens are gorgeous, and cameras are competent. Yet one key component has been neglected for years: the battery. While AI demands more RAM and storage, driving up costs, the real game-changer could be better battery tech. Manufacturers must stop relying on AI hype and deliver tangible hardware improvements.

AI-driven costs push prices up, but batteries remain stagnant

U.S. phone makers like Samsung and Google have poured resources into artificial intelligence to justify new purchases. On-device AI needs more RAM and storage, but these components are pricier due to global demand. The result? Higher prices or quality cuts. Samsung reportedly sought cheaper displays for the Galaxy S27, and other brands are following. Meanwhile, the battery capacity in Samsung’s Ultra models has stayed at 5,000 mAh since 2020. Six years of stagnation is unacceptable in a fast-moving industry. As noted in a related article, rising chip costs compound the issue: without battery improvements, value for money plummets.

Silicon-carbon batteries could be the breakthrough

Chinese manufacturers have already experimented with silicon-carbon cells, offering higher energy density. Samsung timidly introduced this tech in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra but hasn’t brought it to flagships. The next logical step for Google and Samsung is to invest in batteries rather than chasing AI. A phone that lasts two full days on a single charge would be a real incentive to upgrade. As highlighted in a previous story, meaningful innovation must be tangible.

Why battery life is the deciding factor for 2027 upgrades

According to Wikipedia, lithium-ion batteries have dominated for decades, but safety risks slow innovation. However, the time is ripe for a generational leap. If Samsung and Google fail to introduce larger batteries in upcoming models, many users will hold onto their devices. Battery is the last hardware frontier, and ignoring it erodes consumer trust. I won’t spend hundreds on a phone that offers the same autonomy as three years ago. Give me a better battery, and I’ll upgrade.
