Days before WWDC 2026, rumors about iOS 27 paint a deep update, called a 'Snow Leopard' release by Bloomberg for its focus on performance and stability. The biggest change involves Siri and Visual Intelligence moving directly into the Camera app.
Camera and Visual Intelligence Merge
Apple is moving Visual Intelligence from the Camera Control button to a new 'Siri' mode within the Camera app. Users can point at objects to get web information, identify plants, animals, or scan QR codes. Two new features include scanning nutrition labels for calorie tracking in Health and extracting phone numbers and addresses from business cards into Contacts. The Camera interface becomes customizable, allowing users to rearrange control widgets like flash, exposure, and timer.
Photos, Shortcuts, and Wallet Get AI Upgrades
The Photos app gains AI tools called Extend and Reframe. Extend generates image content beyond the original frame, while Reframe changes the perspective of spatial photos. Voice-based photo editing is also in testing. Shortcuts now lets users describe a multi-step workflow in natural language, and Siri generates the shortcut instantly. Wallet introduces a 'Create a Pass' option to digitize tickets and membership cards by scanning QR codes or building custom passes with color-coded categories.
System-Wide Improvements and Design Tweaks
Genmoji and Image Playground get more realistic models and lower power consumption. Writing Tools add a dedicated AI grammar checker with contextual suggestions. The Liquid Glass design remains but gains a global opacity slider. Safari receives a refreshed start page with tabs for favorites, history, and bookmarks. Crucially, iOS 27 will support the upcoming foldable iPhone with side-by-side multitasking and sidebar layouts, though it will not run iPad apps.
The update launches in September alongside new iPhones. A public beta arrives in July, while developers get access June 8. For broader Apple strategy context, read our coverage on Apple canceling Vision Pro 2 and MacBook Neo and macOS 27.
