The integration of AI-powered coding tools is creating deep divides within the open source community. While many developers embrace large language models to accelerate development, others categorically reject any code generated by AI. When it comes to the Linux kernel, however, creator and lead maintainer Linus Torvalds has taken a firm stance: he will support using AI to improve the project, and those who disagree can do what open source allows: fork it or leave.

Torvalds sets the record straight: AI is welcome in the kernel

In a lengthy post on the Linux kernel mailing list, Torvalds wrote bluntly: "Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away." The kernel leader's remarks come amid a heated debate over Sashiko, an agentic Linux kernel code review system. Its creators claim that in tests, Sashiko can independently find 53.6 percent of bugs that would later be fixed by human coders in subsequent commits. However, the tool also generates false positives, with an estimated rate "well within the 20% range."

The reliability debate over AI tools in critical code

The kernel community has historically been cautious about introducing new code, and the idea that AI could introduce hard-to-detect bugs has raised concerns. Torvalds, however, made clear he is "willing to absolutely put his foot down" in support of AI tools. He emphasized that AI is no different from other automated tools already in use, and rejecting it on ideological grounds is unreasonable. His stance aligns with industry trends: Anthropic recently pushed for stricter AI laws, while OpenAI introduced GPT-Red to automate red-teaming. Torvalds added that those opposed to AI code can use a fork, but the main project will continue to embrace innovation.

Impact on the future of kernel development

Adopting tools like Sashiko could significantly reduce the workload on human maintainers, speeding up bug detection and fixing. However, false positives remain a challenge. Torvalds acknowledged the issue but stressed that benefits outweigh costs. With this position, the Linux kernel aligns with broader trends: major infrastructure investments like TSMC's in the US show the tech industry betting on AI. Torvalds' decision may influence other open source projects, prompting a rethink of AI's role in critical software. For more on Linus Torvalds, see the Wikipedia entry.
