A consortium of companies has launched a pilot project in Massachusetts that allows electric vehicle owners to supply energy back to the grid during peak demand. The initiative, a collaboration between Eversource, National Grid, EnergyHub, Sunrun, and The Mobility House, represents a concrete step toward the widespread adoption of Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology. Participants can join the existing ConnectedSolutions program and receive compensation for the energy they provide. This innovative system leverages EV batteries, which have on average six times the capacity of a home backup battery. Even if only a fraction of EV owners participate, the aggregated resource would be enough to support the grid during peak times.

How Bidirectional Charging Works and Supports the Grid

The system uses bidirectional charging to turn car batteries into mobile energy reserves. During high-demand events such as heatwaves, vehicles return electricity to the grid, easing the strain on traditional power plants. Participants set their vehicle usage times through an app, ensuring the battery is charged when needed. Russell Vare, vice president at The Mobility House, explained that discharging occurs only a few hours per year during critical moments, without affecting daily mobility. Combining V2G with active managed charging, which staggers overnight charging times, prevents sudden consumption spikes.

V2G technology promises to lower electricity costs for everyone, even those who do not own an electric vehicle. Utilities face growing energy demand from data centers, heat pumps, and EVs themselves, while transitioning to intermittent renewable sources. Chip Silverman from Sunrun emphasized that aggregating thousands of batteries creates a virtual power plant capable of delivering substantial power.
