Microsoft has announced a significant update for Minecraft Java Edition. For the first time in 17 years, the minimum and recommended system requirements have been raised. This change aims to ensure stable performance and support future features, but it carries implications for players with older PCs.

New minimum and recommended requirements for Minecraft Java Edition

The new minimum requirements demand an Intel Core i3-10100 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 processor, 8 GB of RAM (12 GB with integrated graphics), and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 or better GPU. The operating system must be Windows 10 64-bit, macOS 12, or Linux 64-bit. For the recommended experience, Microsoft suggests an Intel Core i5-12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600, 16 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. These specs align with the most common hardware in June's Steam Hardware Survey, which also shows AMD's market share exceeding 45% compared to Intel.

Impact on players with older hardware

Those whose PCs barely meet the old requirements may face difficulties. Microsoft stated that the game will still launch, but performance and visual quality are not guaranteed on below-spec hardware. In the future, with the transition from OpenGL to Vulkan, some systems may no longer be supported. This forces players to consider an upgrade at a time when RAM prices are at record highs.

Comparison with Bedrock Edition and alternatives

For those who cannot or prefer not to upgrade their PC, the Bedrock Edition exists with lower requirements (4 GB RAM and less powerful CPUs). However, switching to Bedrock means giving up many custom mods and Java Edition specific features. Microsoft suggests this as a temporary alternative.

Upgrade costs and opportunities

Fortunately, you do not need to spend thousands of dollars. A used or refurbished PC with specs close to the recommended ones can be found for $350 to $500. Additionally, deals such as Apple's weekend offers with up to $500 off on MacBook Pro M5 Pro can represent an opportunity for those seeking a performant system also for gaming. Read more here. Meanwhile, it is important to keep an eye on cybersecurity, as shown by the recent case of an autonomous hacker released by OpenAI that alarmed Italian SMEs see the article.
