NASA and Eric Schmidt's Relativity Space Team Up for 2028 Mars Aeolus Orbiter Mission

[2026-06-18] Author: Risoluto Redazione

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt acquired Relativity Space last year and now the company is partnering with NASA on an ambitious Mars mission. The space agency has announced a collaboration with Relativity Space to launch the Martian orbiter called Aeolus, with a launch window set for 2028. Similar to other partnerships with private companies like SpaceX, NASA will rely on Relativity Space to ferry its scientific payload to the Red Planet. The company will provide the spacecraft, rocket, and cruise operations to deliver the agency's science instruments to their destination.

The Scientific Instruments of Aeolus

Aeolus will carry four complementary science instruments designed to provide the first integrated daily global view of Martian winds, temperatures, dust and clouds. The first is the Doppler Wind and Temperature Sounder, which will measure wind and temperature profiles. The Thermal Limb Sounder will provide vertical temperature profiles and observations of dust and water ice clouds. The Surface Radiometric Sensor Package will measure surface energy balance and dust and cloud properties. Finally, the Wide-Field Context Camera will capture global images of atmospheric activity every day. These instruments will be designed and built by scientists at NASA's Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, California.

Reducing Risks for Future Missions

NASA explains that by learning more about Martian dust, winds, temperatures and seasonal atmospheric behavior, we can reduce risks for future landings on the planet, whether crewed or uncrewed. Data collected by Aeolus will help fine-tune future spacecraft's entry, descent and landing systems. Aeolus will also serve as a proof of concept for Relativity Space's Interplanetary Sciences Program. At the moment, the company has yet to provide technical details about the spacecraft and rocket that will be used, nor has it proven it can fulfill such large missions. Schmidt acquired Relativity Space in March 2025 and a few months later confirmed he took a controlling interest with the goal of putting data centers in orbit.
