NASA Tests Ernest Rover: A New Frontier for Mars and Lunar Exploration

[2026-06-20] Author: Meteora Web

Space exploration constantly pushes technological boundaries, and NASA's new rover prototype, named Ernest, promises to revolutionize how we study distant worlds. While current rovers like Perseverance crawl along and struggle with rough terrain, Ernest introduces an active suspension that allows it to lift individual wheels to overcome obstacles and climb steep slopes. Recent tests in the Colorado Desert demonstrated impressive capabilities: in seven days, it covered over 16 miles at a top speed of about 0.6 mph, significantly faster than its predecessors.

How Active Suspension Works

Unlike the passive rocker-bogie system used since the Sojourner rover, Ernest features two powered joints in the front that articulate a gimbal, enabling various gaits such as squirming, wheel-walking, and obstacle-climbing. Its four steerable wheels allow movement in any direction without complex maneuvers. The system can switch between active and passive modes depending on the task and energy needs, optimizing performance.

Autonomous Decision-Making for Future Missions

The latest version of the prototype boasts enhanced independent decision-making capabilities, reducing reliance on human controllers back on Earth. This is crucial for missions to Mars or the Moon, where communication delays demand autonomy. According to James Keane, a JPL planetary scientist, with Ernest you could take a science road trip across the Moon or Mars. NASA aims to develop rovers that can cover more ground faster, expanding discovery possibilities.
