The fact. OpenAI has unveiled GPT-Red: an LLM designed to act as a super hacker. Not a human red team, but a model that autonomously finds vulnerabilities in other models. They use it internally to make their systems safer. The news broke on July 16, 2026 via MIT Technology Review.

Why it matters. For Italian SMEs using OpenAI APIs or derivative models, security is now handled by a closed-source AI. GPT-Red can discover exploits no human would find, but the details remain secret. No independent audit, no transparency. Europe's AI Act requires risk assessments, but without access to OpenAI's internal models, oversight is just paperwork. If GPT-Red fixes a flaw, good; but if the flaw is not disclosed to the open-source ecosystem, LLaMA or Mistral users remain exposed. In practice, US technical superiority translates into a security advantage Europe cannot replicate. While the EU debates digital sovereignty, the real defense capability rests with a single company in San Francisco.

Our position is clear:

We, at Meteora Web, see every day how Italian SMEs underestimate cybersecurity. Servers without backups, unprotected forms, plain-text credentials. Adding an AI super hacker to this picture without public oversight is a huge risk. We are not against innovation — we are for verifiable security, not just declared. GPT-Red is a step forward, but if it stays locked inside OpenAI, it widens the digital divide. Europe must invest immediately in an independent evaluation infrastructure for AI models — like it does for drugs or aircraft. We cannot entrust the security of our businesses to an algorithm we cannot even inspect.

What to do. For Italian developers: demand contractual guarantees from AI vendors, ask for certified security reports. For business owners: don't trust black-box APIs with sensitive data. For policymakers: fund a European AI red-teaming agency, modelled on ENISA but with real LLM expertise. Security is not optional, and cannot be outsourced. It is the foundation for digital business. We have been saying it for years: cybersecurity in Italian SMEs is systematically undervalued. GPT-Red doesn't solve the problem, it shifts it. If Europe doesn't wake up, we will keep paying in trust what we could earn in control.
