Have you ever paid for banners that nobody clicked? We did, at the beginning. We ran display ads, picked "generic interests" and watched impressions grow while sales stayed flat. Then we realized: display advertising without targeting is like renting a billboard on a highway at night – only seen by those who drive with their lights off.

After eight years of real campaigns for Italian SMEs, we learned that display only works when it stops being background noise and becomes a message for the right person at the right moment. Here's how we do it – no textbook theory, just what we use every day.

Why display advertising without targeting is like shouting into a desert?

The first time we managed a display campaign for a furniture company, we spent €800 in one week and got zero sales. Zero. The client was furious – rightfully so. The problem? We set targeting to "furniture and design" – a category so broad it included architecture students, DIY enthusiasts, and people looking for used furniture. None of them were ready to buy a €2,000 sofa.

Display advertising is a cold channel by nature: it doesn't catch an active search like Search does. That's why targeting is everything. If you don't narrow down your audience, you pay to show banners to people who will never buy from you. We call it the “inexperience tax”.

The difference lies in three levers:

  • Demographic and geographic targeting: age, income, location. Obvious, but often forgotten.
  • Intent-based targeting: people who have already searched for related keywords (In-Market Audiences).
  • Custom Audiences: the real ace up your sleeve. More on that below.

How to build custom audiences that actually work?

The decisive step is to stop using only Google's predefined segments and start building audiences based on your own data. At Meteora Web, we always start with website visitors. With a few clicks in Google Ads you can create a list of people who visited a specific page – for example the “Quote” page or a product page.

Here's the practical process:

  1. Open Google Ads, go to Tools & Settings > Shared Library > Audience Manager.
  2. Click the “+” sign and choose Custom audience.
  3. Select Website visitors and define the rule: “URL contains /quote” with a lookback window of 30 days.
  4. Give it a clear name (e.g. “Quote visitors 30d”) and save.

The Google Ads remarketing tag (global site tag) must already be installed on your site to populate the list. If you don't have it, here's the code to insert in your site's :

Sponsored Protocol

<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=AW-123456789"></script>
<script>
  window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
  function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}
  gtag('js', new Date());
  gtag('config', 'AW-123456789');
</script>

Once your list reaches at least 1,000 users, you can use it in a display campaign with CPM or CPA bidding. The result? Instead of paying €0.50 per click from a stranger, you pay €0.10 per click from someone who has already shown interest.

Don't stop at the website. You can create Custom Audiences from CRM files: upload an email list (with privacy policy in order) and Google will match them to logged-in users. This works great for upsell or reactivation campaigns.

What separates effective remarketing from annoying ads?

Remarketing has a bad reputation: “that banner follows me everywhere”. If done poorly, it's true. The difference lies in three tactics we always use:

  • Frequency capping: set it to 3-5 impressions per day per user. More becomes stalking.
  • List duration: don't chase someone who visited a page 6 months ago. Set a lookback window of 30-60 days maximum.
  • Exclusions: people who already bought must not see buy banners. Show them cross-sell or loyalty content.

Dynamic remarketing is a step further. It shows the user exactly the product they viewed, with price and availability. To set it up you need a product feed in Google Merchant Center and the dynamic remarketing tag. We only recommend it to those with a well-structured catalog of at least 50 products and decent traffic volume.

How to measure if display is driving conversions or just wasted impressions?

This is where the wheat separates from the chaff. Display by nature generates indirect conversions: the user sees the banner, doesn't click, but a week later arrives directly on your site and buys. If you only measure last-click, display looks useless.

Sponsored Protocol

We always enable view-through conversion tracking. In Google Ads, activate it at campaign level: Settings > Conversions > View-through conversion window (we recommend 30 days). This way Google attributes the sale even to those who saw the banner without clicking.

Then we use Looker Studio to merge Google Ads data with GA4 data. We build a dashboard showing: impressions, CTR, cost, view-through and last-click conversions, partial ROAS. Only then can you tell if display is doing its “top of funnel” job.

We have a dedicated guide on these dashboards: Looker Studio with GA4 — Custom dashboards. If display is part of your strategy, that dashboard is essential.

What to do now — Checklist for a display campaign that sells

  • Install the Google Ads remarketing tag on your entire site, excluding the purchase confirmation page (to avoid showing buy banners to buyers).
  • Create at least 3 custom audiences: product page visitors, cart abandoners, blog visitors (for nurturing).
  • Set up a display campaign targeting these lists, not generic interests. Initial budget: €10-20/day, manual CPM.
  • Enable view-through conversions with a 30-day window. Set the “Purchase” action as primary, “View-through” as secondary.
  • Monitor view-through ROAS after 2 weeks. If cost per conversion is lower than Search (or acceptable for your margin), scale budget.
  • Exclude converters from purchase remarketing lists using a negative audience of “All converters”.

Display advertising isn't dead. It's just been buried under poorly run campaigns. When you use targeting and remarketing properly, it becomes a lever that Search can't cover: reaching people who aren't searching for you yet but are already interested. We see it every day in our projects – clients who stop throwing money at invisible banners.

If you want to dive into the full Google Ads ecosystem, our pillar guide on profitable campaigns covers Search, Shopping and Performance Max too. Display is just one piece of the puzzle, but when you play it well, the whole picture changes.
