Apple Under the Microscope: Innovation or Stagnation in New Products?

[2026-03-30] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

In the dynamic world of technology, where innovation is often the main driver, Apple's recent moves are raising significant questions. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, known for his in-depth analysis of the Cupertino giant, recently expressed a rather blunt opinion in his Power On newsletter. According to Gurman, many of the products Apple presented this month were characterized by innovation that can be described as 'as incremental as ever.'

The Evolution of AirPods Max

A prime example of this trend concerns the new AirPods Max. The decision to name them 'AirPods Max 2' was described by Gurman as a 'huge gamble,' given that the main new features are limited to the integration of the H2 chip, already present in other devices since 2022. Although the new AirPods Max boast improved features like enhanced Active Noise Cancellation, superior audio quality, Adaptive Audio, Personalized Volume, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation, many of these capabilities stem precisely from the chip upgrade. The real problem, according to Gurman, lies in the addition of the '2' in the name. Historically, this suffix indicated substantial hardware changes, a true generational leap. With the AirPods Max 2, however, the name suggests progress that is not reflected in the actual changes. There have been no design changes from the previous generation, and even the Smart Case maintains its design, which was criticized at the time. As with the previous update to the USB-C port, this move seems more aimed at sustaining sales than pushing the product to new frontiers.

MacBook Neo and Studio Display XDR

Gurman acknowledges that the MacBook Neo represents a significant step forward in terms of accessibility, positioning itself as the most affordable MacBook ever offered by Apple. The Studio Display XDR is also praised for meeting many user expectations. However, the analysis extends to other devices presented during the month. Many of these, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, iPhone 17e, and the standard Studio Display, received mainly processor updates, without introducing disruptive innovations. This approach raises questions about Apple's product strategy, especially in a market that constantly expects revolutions.

Success Despite the Lack of Innovation

Despite these observations, it is undeniable that Apple continues to achieve enormous success. The company recently recorded record revenue, a testament to its customer loyalty and brand strength. Gurman himself admits that Apple products continue to be purchased in mass. His conclusion is food for thought: 'Imagine if the recent product updates had been as impressive as the advertising.' This suggests that the effectiveness of Apple's marketing might, in some cases, surpass the actual innovation introduced in the devices.

The technology industry is constantly evolving, and artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly central role. Companies like OpenAI are aiming for an ever-increasing number of professionals to dominate the future of AI, as highlighted by their plan to double their workforce. Even giants like Nvidia, with announcements such as those from Jensen Huang about achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), are pushing the boundaries of what is possible. In this context, Apple's approach, although commercially effective, could be tested in the long term. The history of computing teaches us that radical innovation, even if risky, is often what defines true market leaders. Think of the pioneers who, starting from a garage, built technological empires, or the networks that formed the Internet even before the World Wide Web. These examples demonstrate how a bold vision can change the digital world.

Our Publication Thinks That...

Gurman's analysis raises a crucial point for Apple. While on one hand the company demonstrates an extraordinary ability to maintain high demand for its products even with incremental updates, on the other hand this strategy could prove unsustainable in the long term. In an era dominated by artificial intelligence and rapid innovations in fields like nuclear fusion and robotics, an overly conservative approach could lead Apple to lose its competitive edge. It is essential that the company balances its solid customer base with a continuous push towards true innovation—the kind that not only improves the user experience but redefines product categories and opens new possibilities, as may happen with future operating system updates like iOS 27 or with new strategic directions in the field of AI. The challenge will be to maintain the balance between the stability that customers appreciate and the revolution that the technology market expects.
