An unconfirmed rumor has emerged suggesting that Apple is working on a significant innovation for its next-generation smartwatch. According to leaker Kosutami, the Apple Watch Series 12 could include a health sensor built directly into one of its bands. The rumor, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on July 3, 2026, describes a sensor injection-molded into a silicone band, with Apple reportedly not yet having solved how to integrate similar hardware into bands made from other materials. No details have been provided on what the sensor is actually meant to measure.

A Concept Repeated in Apple Patents for Over a Decade

This is not the first time band-based sensing has been proposed for the Apple Watch. As early as 2017, a patent described modular band links that could each house different functions, such as blood pressure monitors and sweat sensors. Later that same year, another patent proposed a self-adjusting band that could improve the accuracy of onboard biometric sensors by ensuring a snugger fit. In 2019, a batch of smart band patents covered skin-texture authentication and other embedded functionality, and in 2021 a dedicated hydration sensor patent suggested using electrodes against the skin to measure electrolyte concentration in sweat. None of this patent activity has led to a shipping product so far, and Apple routinely files patents for concepts that never reach customers.

Mixed Credibility of the Source

Kosutami has a mixed track record in tech leaks. While the leaker has been correct on some predictions, the username is also associated with unverified claims. Apple has clearly researched adding sensors to bands extensively, but that does not mean a final product exists. The rumor is new, uncorroborated by other sources, and should be taken with a heavy pinch of salt for now.

What We Know About Apple Watch Series 12 So Far

The Apple Watch Series 12 is expected to be a minor upgrade, primarily featuring a new chip. The design is likely to remain the same as that introduced with the Series 10. Launch is anticipated in fall 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple's first foldable iPhone. If the sensor-in-band rumor proves true, it would represent a major step forward in wearable health monitoring, but for now it remains speculation.
