Camera-Equipped AirPods and AI Pendant: Apple's New Vision for Siri, CEO Transition and Legal Battles

[2026-05-07] Author: Ing. Calogero Bono

Apple is preparing to write a new chapter in its technological history, executing a three-pronged strategy that spans innovative hardware, a delicate leadership transition, and complex legal challenges. According to the latest reports, the long-anticipated AirPods Pro with built-in cameras have reached an advanced testing stage, marking a decisive step toward mass production. This is not a simple camera for taking photos or videos. The sensor, housed in a slightly longer stem, will have the exclusive purpose of feeding Siri and Apple Intelligence with real-time visual information. A small LED will light up to signal the activation of visual intelligence, allowing users to point at an object and ask contextual questions from recognizing a dish to reading a nutrition label for calorie tracking. As reported by sources close to the project, this paradigm shift transforms the earbuds into a sensory extension of the iPhone.

Beyond the Earbuds: The AirTag-Sized Pendant for Tactile Augmented Reality

But Apple's vision does not stop at the AirPods. Bloomberg has revealed that the company is developing a new wearable accessory the size of an AirTag, a genuine pendant to be clipped onto clothing or worn as a necklace. This device, lacking a display and laser projector, will incorporate an always-on camera and a microphone for Siri. Unlike the failed Humane AI Pin, the pendant will be an iPhone accessory, delegating most of the processing to the phone thanks to a limited-performance internal chip. Its interface will be purely voice-based, with a speaker still under evaluation. The launch is expected in 2027, in sync with advanced Siri features arriving with iOS 27. This move positions Apple in direct competition with Meta Ray-Ban, although Apple's first smart glasses, expected by late 2026 or early 2027, will not feature an integrated AR display, focusing instead on premium build quality and deep iPhone ecosystem integration.

Tim Cook in China and the Handover to John Ternus

Meanwhile, Apple's executive landscape is bracing for a monumental shift. Tim Cook, who will step down as CEO on September 1st, has been invited by President Trump to join a diplomatic mission to China to meet President Xi Jinping. Cook will assume the role of executive chairman, dedicating himself exclusively to relations with global policymakers. Succeeding him will be John Ternus, the current hardware chief, who can focus on product strategy without the geopolitical pressures that marked Cook's tenure. The China visit comes at a crucial time for supply chains and US-China trade relations, a context Apple must manage with utmost care. As reported by Semafor, the Trump administration personally selected the CEOs to invite, underscoring the strategic importance of these meetings.

The Rave Lawsuit and Shadows Over App Store Control

All is not rosy for Apple. The company has been sued by Rave, a co-viewing app that was removed from the App Store in August 2025. Rave accuses Apple of violating antitrust laws, claiming the removal was motivated by competition with SharePlay, Apple's native service. According to the lawsuit, Apple also falsely labeled the Mac app as malware. However, discussions on Reddit and reports from antivirus firms like Kaspersky and BitDefender indicate the app had unmoderated public chat rooms, child sexual abuse material, and scams, giving Apple a solid reason to intervene for user protection. Rave has filed suits in five countries, seeking reinstatement and damages. This case fits into a broader antitrust scrutiny of App Store policies, similar to the 250 million dollar Siri settlement Apple faced. Meanwhile, incoming CEO Ternus will have to balance innovation and regulatory compliance.

The Future Between Visual Intelligence and Privacy

The combination of camera-equipped AirPods, a wearable pendant, and smart glasses outlines an ecosystem where AI becomes pervasive and invisible. Apple aims to make Siri a visual, contextual assistant capable of interpreting the surrounding environment. But this raises crucial privacy questions. The activation LED is a first step, but the idea of an always-on camera (even if only for AI) could face pushback, as happened with Google Glass. Apple will need to prove that data remains local and secure, perhaps leveraging the Neural Engine in its chips. In this context, the transition to Ternus could bring a new emphasis on innovative hardware, while Cook handles the political relationships needed to expand production in China and navigate trade tensions. Analysts are watching closely how these moves will redefine the wearables and consumer AI market, with related articles such as Spotify's AI-generated audio platform showing how audio and AI competition is heating up across the board.
