Claude from Anthropic connects to your bank account with Personal Finance, via Plaid

Anthropic has announced Personal Finance, a Claude feature that connects to your bank accounts and credit cards through Plaid. Access is read-only, and the beta starts these days for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the United States. Claude can summarize your spending, flag suspicious charges and explain financial terms. It matters because chatbots are moving into the most sensitive data, and Anthropic is following the path OpenAI took in May.

A few terms, before we get into the facts. Plaid is the platform that bridges apps and banks, so Claude never sees your passwords. Read-only means you can view data but not move money. Beta is a testing phase, with features still being refined. APR is the annual percentage rate of a loan or card. Hub is Claude's dedicated area where Personal Finance lives.

What does Personal Finance do in Claude?

After connecting your accounts, you can ask Claude where this month's money went. The chatbot adds up spending across connected accounts and divides it by category, for example rent and utilities, food and drink, shopping. You can dig deeper with follow-up questions, such as why the figure is higher than usual.

According to TechCrunch, Anthropic says the tool goes beyond summaries. It analyzes transactions to flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and bills that keep rising. It can also explain the APR and calculate how much interest you paid over the past year.

According to ZDNET, the feature also generates tables and charts. It can answer questions about future goals, such as a holiday six months away.

What data does Claude see and how is it protected?

For the accounts you choose to connect, and only those, The Verge reports that Claude sees the bank name, account names and types, the last four digits of the number, balances and credit limits, up to two years of transactions.

According to Anthropic, Claude cannot move, manage or invest money and is not designed to give investment advice. With Plaid in the middle, the chatbot does not see passwords, and the bank does not have to deal with unverified bots.

On privacy, Anthropic says conversations in the hub are not used to train its models. Outside the hub, your Claude privacy settings apply instead.

How is Claude different from ChatGPT Finances?

OpenAI introduced a similar feature in ChatGPT in May, also with Plaid. Engadget notes that the features are largely the same, including weekly charts, spending calendars and budget summaries.

The difference lies in the data. According to Engadget, ChatGPT applies existing control settings, so users who do not change them are opted in to model training by default. Anthropic also emphasizes the absence of advertising and sponsored recommendations, and the fact that it does not offer cards, loans or accounts of its own.

When does it arrive and who can use it?

The beta starts this week for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the United States. The sources give no dates for Italy or Europe.

Engadget points out that Plaid's network reaches more than 12,000 financial institutions, including major American banks such as Citi and Chase. ZDNET suggests the feature is aimed mainly at people who already use Claude every day and do not want to change interface.

The launch fits into Claude's expansion into new sectors. TechCrunch recalls Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services, released earlier this year. Engadget links the timing to Anthropic's upcoming stock market listing, but that is the newspaper's own assessment.

Limits to know

Some questions remain unanswered. According to ZDNET, Anthropic has not responded about the risk of hallucinations inside Personal Finance, nor about how long generated panels are kept. There is no independent data on calculation accuracy. Availability is limited to the United States, and no plan for Europe has been declared. It is also unclear what the future collaboration with regulated professionals and institutions will concretely mean.

What changes for those who work with digital tools

If you build for clients in the financial sector, the signal is clear. A natural-language interface over bank data is becoming something users expect, and even a management tool can offer it. If you want to understand where AI saves time in your work, start with the practical uses for small businesses. For anyone handling sensitive data, the access model also matters. An intermediary that isolates credentials and allows only reading is an example worth copying, whatever the software.

Our take

Anthropic's choice is technically cautious. Read-only access, no shared passwords, training excluded inside the hub. But the protection only applies inside the hub, and a single conversation outside it falls back to the general settings. It is a detail many users will miss. The message about not selling financial products is a good commercial argument, and it remains a statement from the company. Before trusting the numbers, independent verification of errors is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude move my money?

No. According to Anthropic, access is read-only, and Personal Finance cannot transfer, manage or invest money. It is not even designed to give investment advice.

Can Claude see my bank password?

No. The connection goes through Plaid, so Claude does not see your banking credentials. It only sees data from the accounts you choose to connect.

Are my financial conversations used to train Claude?

Not inside the Personal Finance hub, according to Anthropic. Outside the hub, your privacy settings apply instead, so it is worth checking them.

Is Personal Finance available in Italy?

Not for now. The beta is reserved for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the United States. The sources give no dates for other countries.

What bank data can Claude read?

Bank name, account name and type, last four digits, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transactions. Only for the accounts you connect.

What to watch after Claude's American beta

The real test begins when the feature leaves the United States and meets different users and rules. Here is what to follow.

  • Check whether Anthropic announces partnerships with banks and advisors, as the press release suggests.
  • Read Claude's privacy settings outside the hub before talking about money.
  • Follow any independent tests on calculation errors and hallucinations.
