Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash, Google brings AI videos to 15 seconds and opens them up in Vids

Google has announced Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash, its new model for generating videos with artificial intelligence. Clips now run up to 15 seconds, compared with 10 for the previous version, and the price drops by 30%. The model is generally available to developers and businesses, and it also arrives in Google Vids with a free quota. It matters because it puts producing promotional videos within reach of anyone without a studio.

A few terms before we get into the facts. Omni is Google's family of video models, and Flash is the variant designed for speed and lower costs. Gemini API is the interface developers use to run the models inside their own programs. Multi-turn editing means changing the same video through successive requests, without starting over. SynthID is an imperceptible watermark that marks generated content. Provisioned Throughput is computing capacity reserved for steady workloads.

What does Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash bring new?

According to Google DeepMind, the model generates and edits videos natively up to 15 seconds. Duration is set in one-second steps, from 3 to 15.

Google also claims less visual "drift", meaning characters and objects that change appearance from one frame to the next. Speech improves too, with clearer lip sync and more distinct voices, and smoother camera movements with fewer unwanted cuts.

How much does it cost and how do you save?

Google lists 0.07 dollars per second for 720p video, 30% less than Omni 1.1. The calculation is ours. A 15-second clip at 720p therefore costs about 1.05 dollars.

The workflow described aims to cut spending. You make a quick draft at 360p or 720p, fix a detail with a follow-up edit instead of regenerating everything, then bring the best version up to 1080p or 4K.

What can you do for free in Google Vids?

According to the Google blog, anyone with a Google account or a Workspace subscription can generate up to three 15-second videos a month in Vids, at no cost. You start at vids.new.

Google mentions product promos in a single pass, static images turned into video with consistent characters and more natural narration. If you already use Workspace, you may be interested in our guide to Gemini in Google Workspace.

Where can the model be used?

For developers there is the Gemini API, with prototypes in Google AI Studio. If you want to start with practice, you will find our guide to Google AI Studio. Businesses can try it in the Google Cloud console.

For users there is Flow, then Vids and Google Ads. In the Gemini app, the 15-second videos are for now available to Google AI Ultra subscribers, as reported by Android Authority. For those who build, here is the Gemini API guide.

Limits to know

All the quality improvements are claimed by Google and illustrated with examples chosen by Google itself. We have no independent tests. Google admits that development continues on fast sports action, rapid script changes and complex physics. It is not clear how far the three free videos will go for professional use, or whether the limits will change.

What changes for those working in digital

For a small business, a short promotional video becomes a test costing a few euros, or free in Vids. You can start from product photos and get variants for different audiences and formats, using editing in turns. Those who manage catalogues or e-commerce can experiment with virtual try-ons and product rotations. Developers can integrate video generation into their own tools, and our overview of Gemini models and APIs helps you find your way.

Our take

The most interesting move is not the duration but the price and the stepwise workflow. A cheap draft, a touch-up, then high resolution. It is a cost model even non-technical people can understand. The three free videos are above all a way to bring people into Vids and Workspace, and it is better to say so openly. The question of trust remains. An invisible watermark helps, but it is not enough for someone watching an ad. If you publish generated videos, disclose it.

Frequently asked questions

How long are Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash videos?

Up to 15 seconds, compared with 10 for Omni 1.1. You can choose the duration in one-second steps, from 3 to 15.

Is Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash free?

Only partly. In Google Vids you can generate three 15-second videos a month at no cost. Via API the listed price is 0.07 dollars per second at 720p.

Do I need a subscription to use it in the Gemini app?

For now, yes. According to Google, the 15-second videos in the Gemini app are reserved for Google AI Ultra subscribers.

Can I edit a video I have already generated?

Are the videos recognisable as AI-generated?

In theory, yes. Google states that outputs carry an imperceptible SynthID watermark.

What to watch in the coming months for Google's AI videos

The launch is only the beginning. Real-world results and usage rules will matter over the next few weeks.

  • Check whether Vids' free quota changes or is extended beyond three videos a month.
  • Read independent tests of the stated limits, such as fast action and complex physics.
  • Compare the cost per second with your video budget before building a fixed workflow.
