The voice search button in the Google bar on most Android home screens is getting a major redesign. Tapping the colorful microphone now brings up a new interface with a bottom toolbar that lets you switch between Search, AI Mode, Search Live, and Song Search. The update is currently rolling out in the beta version of the Google app.
The previous design, introduced earlier this year, simply transcribed your request and sent it to regular Search. It also featured a separate song lookup shortcut. The new approach borrows the switcher from Google Lens, which already offers Search, Translate, Live, and Create modes. This time, the voice experience gets the same treatment with four clear options.
A four-bar waveform and a redesigned interaction flow
When you start speaking, a four-bar waveform animates in the bottom bar and your words appear at the top of the screen in real time. After you finish the query, you can tap the forward arrow to see results. On the left, a stop button returns you to the search box with the transcript preserved, allowing you to refine the request before submitting.

AI Mode is the generative experience that answers complex questions with direct responses. Search Live provides an interactive conversational flow, while Song Search remains the familiar Shazam-like tool. One notable detail is that Google remembers the last mode you used.
