Reddit moves to mandatory login, test outside the USA in Q4

On 29 October 2026 Reddit confirmed it will move to an account-based experience. CEO Steve Huffman said so in the shareholder letter for the third quarter. Tests will start in the fourth quarter in some markets outside the United States. It matters because Reddit is one of the most searched sources on the web, and the move affects traffic, advertising and the training of artificial intelligence models.

A few terms before we get into the facts. A logged-in user is someone who has signed in with their own account, a logged-out user browses without one. Scraping is the automatic collection of content from a site, carried out by programs called bots or crawlers. Referrals are visits that come from another source, for example a search engine. DAUq stands for unique daily active users, the number Reddit uses to measure itself.

What did Reddit announce?

In the shareholder letter Huffman describes a shift to «a logged-in-only experience». In the same letter he uses the softer phrase «primarily logged-in» experience, meaning mostly with access. Today you can read almost the entire site without an account. That will no longer be the case.

The timing is vague. Reddit will begin testing the mechanism in the fourth quarter in selected non-US markets. The results will help decide what the global version looks like. According to Punto Informatico, the same restriction is already active for Old Reddit, the older interface. Two days before the announcement, starting 28 October, two separate feeds also arrived. For You mixes followed communities with suggestions based on interests, while Following shows only the communities you have joined.

Why is Reddit doing this?

Four reasons have been given. According to Huffman, account-based access improves the experience, provides more signals for advertising, protects the site's data assets and helps with compliance with emerging rules around the world. He also says it will help retain new users. These are the company's statements, not facts verified by third parties.

Scraping and AI

The data issue is central. 9to5Google reports that, according to Huffman, most unauthorized access, meaning the theft of Reddit's data, comes through sessions without login. Punto Informatico notes that Reddit has sued Perplexity and Anthropic over this activity, while it has agreements with OpenAI and Google. The same article writes that the collaboration with Google could end and that, according to the CEO, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode do not generate traffic.

Traffic from search engines

There is a second factor, less obvious. Huffman writes that search traffic to Reddit was «down meaningfully» in the third quarter, especially logged-out traffic and from the web. In October it reportedly fell on average by more than one million referrals a week. If the pace continues, DAUq could drop in the fourth quarter by a low double-digit percentage, starting from 130 million. The decline is a figure disclosed by the company. The link with the login decision is our own reading between the lines.

Who can still read without an account?

It is not yet clear. According to Huffman, quoted by 9to5Google, «the front page being available logged-out is useful and important». The details of what will remain open have not been defined. 9to5Mac reports, citing Axios, that the homepage will remain accessible to everyone. Content reached through search engines or shared links would also reportedly stay visible. Browsing in other ways or opening a subreddit directly, without an account, does not appear possible anymore.

On private browsing, Huffman says Reddit has rebuilt and re-released incognito mode in the app.

How have users reacted?

Badly, at least in the comments under the CEO's post. TechRadar writes that nearly every reply is negative, with remarks such as «hard disagree». Many fear Reddit will follow the path of Pinterest, which one commenter claims imposed a login and then nearly died. That is one user's opinion, not data. The fact remains that someone arriving from a search today finds the answer without obstacles, and someone reading anonymously avoids personalization.

Limits to keep in mind

  • We do not know which pages will be visible without an account, because Reddit is still defining the details.
  • There is no date for Italy. For now only tests in unnamed non-US markets have been mentioned.
  • It is not verified that login will actually stop scraping. It remains a claim by the company.
  • The DAUq forecasts are Reddit's assumptions, not results.
  • We do not know whether the agreement with Google will hold or how it will change.

What changes for those working in digital

If you work on visibility, Reddit was a source of answers that often appeared in results and AI summaries. A site that closes itself to anonymous users carries less weight in those results. Reviewing your featured snippet strategies on your pages makes more sense, because answers that today come from Reddit could disappear.

If you use Reddit to promote a business, plan on an audience made up of members. Measuring with discipline matters even more, and you need to understand which metrics really matter before investing time on a platform.

If you build websites and apps, there is a case study here. Asking for an account has a friction cost and should be decided carefully. If you must do it, a system like Firebase Authentication reduces the steps. If instead you need a product built around your users, start with custom software development.

Our take

The move has a clear business logic. A logged-in user is easier to measure and is worth more to advertisers. A site full of useful, free content, looted by bots, has every reason to defend itself. But Reddit built its value on an open web, and the exchange is not fair. It shuts the door on bots, but also on people who read and do not want to sign up.

The risk is that login drives away exactly those who arrive from a search today and could become users. The contrast with falling traffic is obvious. Reddit seems to want to offset in loyalty what it loses in visibility. It may work, but only the test will tell.

For those looking for alternatives, more open networks exist, as our piece on Matrix and Mastodon explains. They are choices with their own limits, not ready-made replacements.

Frequently asked questions

Will Reddit require login from everyone?

Not right away and not everywhere. Tests start in the fourth quarter in selected markets outside the USA. Reddit will then decide how to extend the change globally.

Will I still be able to open a Reddit link from Google?

Probably yes. According to the sources, people arriving from search engines or shared links will still be able to see the content. The details, however, have not been defined.

Why is Reddit introducing mandatory login?

For commercial and data protection reasons. The company cites user experience, advertising, regulations and defense against AI scraping. These are reasons stated by the company.

What happens to incognito browsing?

Reddit says it has rebuilt incognito mode in the app. There are no further details on how it works. For now it is a statement from the CEO.

Is the traffic drop connected to this decision?

Probably, but Reddit does not say so explicitly. The CEO reports a drop of more than one million referrals a week in October. The connection is our own interpretation.

What to watch until spring

There are two things to follow. The first is the list of test countries, to see whether Italy is included. The second is the data for the next quarter, to see whether DAUq really falls. In the meantime we suggest three moves.

  • Check where your site's traffic comes from and how much depends on Reddit.
  • Do not rely on a single platform for your presence, always keep a channel you own.
  • If you ask your users for an account, explain what they get in return.
