Signal, the encrypted messaging app, has started testing one of its most requested features on Android: the ability to use the same account on multiple devices without a second phone number. The update is rolling out with Signal for Android beta version 8.20, as spotted by AboutSignal and reported by Engadget.
Linking a second device via QR code
Until now, Signal only worked on one mobile device at a time. Switching phones required signing out and signing back in, often losing chat history unless a backup was made. The only exceptions were the desktop app and the dedicated iPad app. With this update, an overflow menu on the main Signal screen offers a “Link device” option, which generates a QR code to scan with the secondary device. Users can also choose whether to transfer message history when linking.

Limits and requirements for shared usage
Signal has already updated its support page with technical details. Each account can link up to 5 devices. Devices are automatically unlinked after 45 days of inactivity. Additionally, the primary phone must come online at least once every 30 days to keep secondary devices active. This behavior mirrors what WhatsApp has offered for years, allowing multiple smartphones or tablets to connect to a central account.
Impact on privacy and competition
Signal's move comes as the European Union pushes major platforms to ensure greater interoperability. Just this week, the EU compelled Google to share search data and allow rival AI on Android, a decision that could also affect the messaging landscape. Signal's new feature aligns with user demands without compromising its core strength: end-to-end encryption. The feature is currently in beta, with a stable release expected in the coming weeks.
