Thousands of unionized Hyundai auto workers began a partial strike at the Ulsan plant in South Korea after negotiations with the automaker broke down over plans to deploy humanoid robots. This marks the most significant pushback from organized labor so far against the latest wave of robotic automation. According to the Wall Street Journal, it is the first factory stoppage in the automotive industry directly related to humanoid robots.

Staged strike: reduced shifts and four-hour walkouts

From July 13 to 15, workers ended day and night shifts two hours early, and from July 20 to 22 they plan four-hour strikes after fifteen rounds of talks failed to reach an agreement. The protest erupted after Hyundai Motor Group unveiled the latest version of the Atlas humanoid robot earlier this year, a bipedal machine over six feet tall capable of lifting more than 100 pounds. Atlas is made by Boston Dynamics, the US robotics company that Hyundai is about to fully acquire as a subsidiary.

Hyundai's plans: 25,000 Atlas robots by 2028 in the US

Hyundai has announced plans to deploy 25,000 Atlas robots starting in 2028, initially at its US factories. This has sparked fear among workers of being replaced by increasingly capable machines. The union demands job guarantees and limits on automation, but negotiations stalled over the company's requests for flexibility in robot deployment. The dispute is a test case for the future of work in the age of artificial intelligence and advanced robotics.

Industry experts say the Hyundai strike could be just the beginning of broader organized resistance to automation. The recent EU regulation compelling Google to share data with AI rivals shows governments are trying to regulate AI's impact, but labor conflicts remain open. Meanwhile, rising costs of AI software push companies to seek alternatives, but for workers the fear of job loss is real.
