Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, is hard to find. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, about 80% of the initial stock went to Apple Stores, which is why online orders slipped to late January. Meanwhile, reports of inner screens getting damaged are coming in, and T-Mobile has raised its discount to $1,200. Google, for its part, is preparing rules to give more visibility to well-built apps on foldables.
A few terms before we get into the facts. An eSIM is a digital SIM, with no physical card. A foldable is a smartphone with a screen that opens like a book. Porting is the transfer of your number from one carrier to another. Jetpack Compose is Google's toolkit for building Android interfaces. An adaptive layout is an interface that changes its arrangement based on the available space.
Where did the iPhone Duo units go?
According to MacRumors, which reports what Gurman said on the Power On podcast, Apple assigned about 80% of the first stock to its own stores. Some locations got only 50 units, while flagship stores received up to about 250. The Fifth Avenue store was reportedly supplied in an unusual way because Apple executives were present at the launch.
Gurman cites people very close to the device's logistics. The result, according to the report, is that those who lined up on the first day generally walked out with the phone, while online pre-orders sold out in a matter of minutes on October 16 and slipped to late January.
How much does the iPhone Duo cost and how does the eSIM work?
On Apple's US store, the 256 GB model starts at $1,999, 512 GB costs $2,199, 1 TB costs $2,599 and 2 TB costs $3,199. In the United Kingdom, the pound prices follow the same pattern, from 1,999 to 3,199.
According to the official Apple page, the phone activates only with an eSIM and does not support a physical SIM. If you buy it in the United States or Puerto Rico, it does not even have a SIM tray. You need a carrier that supports eSIM. Apple specifies that an iPhone you buy outright is unlocked, unless you choose financing with AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon, in which case it stays locked until you pay it off in full.
The T-Mobile discount
According to Tom's Guide, T-Mobile has raised the maximum credit from $1,000 to $1,200. You get it by trading in an eligible device, such as an iPhone 15 Pro or a Galaxy S24+, or by opening a new line with number porting. A specific plan is required, and for new customers that means Experience Beyond 2.0 at $100 per month for one line. The credit is applied over 36 monthly payments. The delivery dates T-Mobile lists run from December 31 to January 6.
The screen problem
According to Android Authority, many buyers found the inner screen damaged after very little use. The site says Apple has publicly acknowledged the problem and confirmed free replacements. Independent teardowns by JerryRigEverything and iFixit suggest poor durability, especially near the center of the hinge. The most common image is a black line running from the edge toward the center, with another thicker line at a right angle.
What Google is doing for apps on foldables
As DDay reports, starting in 2027 the Play Store will take a closer look at how apps and games work on foldables, giving greater visibility to well-made ones. Google announced this at the Android Dev Summit. The exact requirements will arrive by the end of the year. Google also presented an update to Compose adaptive skill, a tool that lets AI agents adapt an existing app to smartphones, foldables, tablets and other formats without separate codebases. For foldables, it can recognize screens suited to tabletop mode.
Limits to know
The stock figures come from an indirect source, Gurman's podcast, and not from Apple. For T-Mobile, it is not specified which carriers are eligible for porting. Google has not explained what will happen to apps that are not optimized, or where the optimization threshold will be set.
What changes for those who work in digital
If you develop apps, the signal is clear. Foldables are becoming a format to take into account, and on Android, having adaptive layouts could soon translate into visibility. If you have an app, check how it behaves on screens of different sizes. If you need help, you will find iOS and Android app development among our services.
If you develop with Flutter or other frameworks, you can start with our guide to Flutter with Firebase. For businesses, a phone that costs nearly $2,000 is not a fleet purchase, at least until the durability of the screen is clear. We had already covered the foldable's initial design in this article.
Our take
A launch with stock concentrated in stores and a visible defect on the screen is not a good start for a product that costs as much as a laptop. The fact that Apple offers free replacements is the right move, but it does not solve the trust issue. The T-Mobile discount looks generous only on the surface, because it ties you to an expensive plan for 36 months. On the software side, Google's move makes sense, but without public rules it remains a promise. For now, the real effect of the Duo is pushing everyone to take adaptive layouts seriously.

Audience, rules and screens, what to watch in the coming months
- Check whether Apple publishes data or fixes for the screen problem before you decide to buy.
- Read the Play Store requirements for foldables when Google publishes them by the end of the year.
- Test your apps on screens of different sizes, including with an emulator.
