Motorola Signature 27 is official, a 7,000 mAh flagship with GrapheneOS

Motorola has unveiled the Signature 27, a flagship aimed at the top end of the market. The announcement came during the Qualcomm Tech Summit in Hawaii. The smartphone runs a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, has a 7,000 mAh battery and comes with seven years of updates. It is also the first phone from the brand compatible with GrapheneOS, and the European price starts at 1,399 euros.

A few terms before we get into the facts. GrapheneOS is an alternative, privacy-focused operating system, until now tied to Google's Pixel phones. Tandem OLED is a double-layer panel that, according to Motorola, uses less power and lasts longer. EVS is an event-based vision sensor designed for fast-moving subjects. Nit is the unit of measurement for screen brightness. Periscope refers to a telephoto lens with a folded optical path for zoom.

What are the specifications of the Signature 27?

According to Punto Informatico, the display is a 6.78-inch Extreme AMOLED Duo with a peak of 12,000 nits. The processor is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, with 12 or 16 GB of RAM and 256 or 512 GB of UFS 4.1 storage.

The dimensions are 162.01×77.04×7.99 millimetres for 227 grams. The certifications are IP68 and IP69, and the glass is Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. The speakers are tuned by Bang & Olufsen.

Configurations vary from market to market. For the United States, 9to5Google reports that only the 512 GB version with 12 GB of RAM will arrive.

How are the cameras and battery?

The triple rear camera has a 50-megapixel Sony Lytia L910 main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto with 3x optical zoom. On the front there is a 50-megapixel camera. Added to these is an EVS sensor dedicated to the Action Shot mode, designed for moving subjects.

The battery is 7,000 mAh with 90 W wired charging. TechRadar compares it with the 5,000 mAh of the Galaxy S26 Ultra. To understand how to protect battery life over time, you might find useful this guide on MacBook battery longevity.

Why is GrapheneOS the most interesting news?

The phone arrives with Android 17, but Motorola declares compatibility with GrapheneOS. According to TechRadar, this system had until now been limited to Google Pixel phones. For those looking for a privacy-oriented phone, it is therefore a second route.

Updates amount to seven years of system and security patches. 9to5Google notes, however, that there is no promise about how often they will arrive. On the security front, those who run vulnerability reporting programmes also talk about it, as in the case of the OpenAI bug bounty.

How much does the Signature 27 cost and when does it come out?

In Italy the starting price is 1,399 euros for the base configuration, according to Punto Informatico, which speaks of arrival in the coming months. TechRadar lists £1,299.99 in the United Kingdom and shipments in Europe from 16 November.

In the United States 9to5Google lists 1,599 dollars, with launch on 19 November and pre-orders open. Android Authority says sales start on 26 November. The colours are Coal Smoke and Capulet Olive. US pre-orders include a Moto Watch Ultra as a limited-time bonus.

Limits to know

Almost all the data comes from Motorola, and none of the sources reports independent tests. The sources diverge on some points, such as Wi-Fi (8 according to Punto Informatico, 7 according to Ars Technica) and reverse wireless charging. Precise dates and availability for Italy are missing. It is unclear how GrapheneOS will behave on the phone in everyday use. TechRadar announces a full review in the coming weeks.

What changes for people working in digital

If you follow security for company devices, a non-Pixel phone compatible with GrapheneOS widens your options. If you develop apps, it is worth checking how they behave on a system without Google services. If you work on iOS and Android apps, add a test on devices like this one. For those buying phones for a team, a price above 1,300 euros makes it hard to justify buying for several people, while seven years of updates help spread the cost over time.

Our take

Motorola's smartest move is not the 12,000-nit screen but the decision to open up to GrapheneOS. It gives the phone a reason to exist beyond the numbers. The price, however, is high for a brand that, as TechRadar notes, may not have the weight to support it. Seven years of updates without commitments on frequency remain a half-made promise. It is worth waiting for independent reviews before trusting it.
