The first AI-created virus is already here — is Italian SME cybersecurity ready?

The news comes from MIT Technology Review: for the first time, a working virus has been entirely designed by an artificial intelligence system. Not an academic proof-of-concept, but real malware, capable of spreading and causing concrete damage. While the spotlight remains on censorship conspiracy theories — another hot topic this week — the real earthquake is silent and concerns every company with a server, a website, or a database.

Why does it matter? Because it changes the economics of the attack. Previously, technical skills were needed to write malicious code. Now, a description in natural language is enough. The marginal cost of a cyberattack drops toward zero, while the scale becomes industrial. For Italian SMEs, already the preferred target according to Clusit reports, the threat is no longer a remote possibility: it is a statistic.

At Meteora Web, we work with companies that manage e-commerce, bookings, and sensitive data. We see the same scene every day: unconfigured backups, outdated plugins, expired SSL certificates. Security is treated as a cost item to be postponed. But with AI generating malware autonomously, postponing is no longer an option. It is an existential risk to the business.

Our position is clear: security is not an option, it is a survival requirement

Those who say AI only amplifies defensive capabilities are telling a half-truth. AI amplifies everything: defense and attack. But defense has a structural problem: it is reactive. Italian SMEs cannot afford a 24/7 SOC, but they can — and must — do the simple things flawlessly. Automatic updates, verified backups, server hardening, strict access policies. You don't need to be a tech company to do this. You need the awareness that the risk is concrete and immediate.

So, what to do? If you have a website or an application that generates revenue, start with a security audit. Not a superficial check: a real vulnerability test, with a report and priorities. Verify that backups are functional, not just configured. Enable two-factor authentication everywhere. And stop thinking your business is too small to be a target: in the AI era, size no longer matters. Only vulnerability does.
