The MIT Technology Review's The Download newsletter for August 7, 2026 highlights two events: the drift of censorship conspiracy theories into official US policy, and the confirmation of the first fully AI-generated virus. Two seemingly distant stories, but they share the same highway: the speed at which technology outpaces our defenses, both cultural and technical.

The AI-created virus is no longer science fiction. It's malware that adapts, mutates, and finds vulnerabilities on its own. For an Italian SME whose WordPress site runs on a 5-euro shared hosting, this is a concrete threat, not a talk-show headline. Most companies we follow lack a working backup, don't update plugins, don't monitor logs. And now the enemy never sleeps, because it's not human.

Our position is clear: those who don't invest in security today, pay in revenue tomorrow

We, at Meteora Web, have said it for years: security in Italian SMEs is systematically underestimated. We see it daily, with sites featuring unprotected forms, plain-text credentials, expired SSL certificates. With generative AI, the game has changed: attacks are no longer the exception; they are the norm. And while the US debates censorship conspiracy theories, Europe and Italy fall behind on what truly matters: defending our digital assets. We don't need a digital sovereignty commissioner if our servers are as vulnerable as a car without airbags.

The link to the second story is direct. When institutions get distracted by political narratives, the fertile ground for attacks grows. Italian SMEs, which represent 99% of the entrepreneurial fabric, cannot afford to wait for politics to notice the problem. They must act now.

What to do, concretely? If you're an entrepreneur or developer, start with a security audit: update everything, enable automatic backups, implement two-factor authentication. If you don't know where to start, ask us. We, at Meteora Web, have resolved SSL emergencies and configured secure servers for clients across Italy. It's not a cost; it's an investment. The first AI virus is just the beginning: those who don't prepare will suffer the next wave. And it won't be merciful.
